Lechler is not happy with Raiders organization

Al Davis' decision not to pick up Tom Cable's option was not seen well by Oakland P S. Lechler (US Presswire). Posted by Josh Katzowitz

On Tuesday, we told you about the, um, interesting decision by owner Al Davis not to renew the option of Raiders coach Tom Cable, casting him into unemployment instead of rewarding him for the team’s best record in eight seasons and a clean sweep of the AFC West.

Now, the fallout begins.

Oakland punter Shane Lechler told CSN Bay Area (via Pro Football Talk) that the decision was a “huge setback” and intimated that it might cause the team’s best players to not want to play for the organization.

“I’m not so sure this isn’t a terrible decision,” Lechler said.

A few other spicy quotes.

On Hue Jackson, the team’s offensive coordinator who now could be in line for Cable’s old job: “Yes, I do respect (Jackson) … Whether he can call plays and pull off the whole head coaching deal and deal with Al Davis on the side, I don’t know.  That’s a lot on somebody’s plate, so we’ll see.”

More on Cable: “I just want to know . . . how do you justify firing somebody when you just went 6-0 in the division and 8-8 in the season after we put in so much as a group, as a unit, as a team with our leader being Tom Cable, how do you just go ahead and whack this guy with, I mean, no reason?”

If anybody can say this in the Raiders organization, it’s Lechler. He’s regarded as the NFL’s finest punter, and if Davis wants to part ways with him because of the above comments, Lechler would have no problem finding a job in the NFL. Hell, maybe that’s exactly Lechler’s plan.

Maybe Lechler’s not just pissed, but maybe he’s also quite brilliant.

And as we all know, pissed and brilliant is a dangerous combination.

Lechler is not happy with Raiders organization

Watchingyoulose-
you are a hammer head and know nothng about football. For the last few yeers, Shane Lechtler has been one of the most productive punters in the game. He might even hands down have the best leg. ALso, football is not offense and defense... its ALSO special teams and the kicking game  And, if u think punting means nothing. then u didnt see the ending of the Giants vs Eagles game 3 weeks ago. BUT I DOUBT U DID SEE IT, BC YOUR ORIGINAL STATEMENT, lets me know what kind of mental midget you are. Hammerhead!

Lechler is not happy with Raiders organization

So let me get this straight.  Oakland finishes .500 for the first time in how long, makes tremendous strides and plays some really good football at times and after all that they decide to fire their coach?   The Raiders are only a couple of players away from making some real noise in the NFL standings, making the playoffs and then who knows what happens after that.... but to fire this guy is insane !!!!

That being said, I know the feeling. As a Lions fan we had Mr Ford run our team into the ground for years until he let his sons basically take over.  He let his best buddy and fellow shmuck Matt Millen destroy our team for years..... finally we too are making strides... thank God his sons have a brain.

Al Davis is a lousy owner.. and as long as he's running the team, I don't see how a team can make it to the next level..... I hope they do because I actually like Oakland.. but firing a coach for no apparant reason  isn't the way to keep players happy.

Lechler is not happy with Raiders organization

I love the Mr. Burns spin but I almost think that we have more of a weekend at Bernies thing going on.  So in reality, Al Davis is dead already and some other people are actually pretending to keep him alive by making stupid, franchise wrecking decisions (too many to list in such a small space).   Raider fans need to find who is pulling the strings on "Bernie/Al" in order to finally get him in a casket.  Us long suffering Blackhawk fans know all about the corpse running the franchise thing prior to Bill Wirtz's "death"......

When has anything the punter has said meant anything? I clicked on this out of sheer morbid curiosity, and got a "the punter was mad at his coach being fired" quote.  Wow, the boundaries of sports journalism have really been pushed back today.

I'm sure that Davis will proceed to try to let Lechler go "for cause" and not pay him. Al Davis is a sad human being for sure. When he does pass, we'll all be subjected to huzzahs for his glory days while they completely ignore the almost willful recent destruction of a proud franchise. I miss the Raiders being relevant and was beginning to enjoy watching them again. Lechler is right about this.

Who would even consider taking this job now? A coach is given one or two seasons to go 19 - 0 and win a Super Bowl. If you don't, you're fired without pay. Al will fight you tooth and nail to not pay you after he fires you. Then the next guy comes in, puts his system in place, and gets fired as the team starts to turn the corner. Why would anyone want to deal with that noise?

Now I know who the model was for Mr. Burns on the Simpsons.  Al "released the hounds" on Tom Cable.

Anyone notice all the red marks on Al's head? That's from too many blows on him prehistoric head. Now don't get me wrong, I am not a raider fan, but Al is truly crazy. the raiders ruled the pre-season, struggled a few games, but took out everyone in their division...this is definitely better than the raiders have done in YEARS, definitly making progress, and some continuity......and then there is Al. The raiders will not regain their success of the past until this crazy old man has departed. sad to say by the look of him in this picture, it may not be long.

Uh oh, the punter is unhappy. The Raiders must do what ever it takes to make their punter happy. Please. What's next, will the long snapper and the holder schedule a press conference! It doesn't matter who coaches so long as Al has his hand in the game -- he hasn't made a smart personnel move in god knows how long.
