Pierre Thomas sent to IR

P. Thomas was placed on IR today. Posted by Josh Katzowitz

With a rushing game that ranked 28th in the NFL this year, the Saints have had to count on QB Drew Brees and a solid corps of WRs, including Marques Colston, Lance Moore and Robert Meachem, to jumpstart an offense that overall was the sixth-most prolific in the NFL this season.

And while it’s disappointing that New Orleans announced today it was placing RB Pierre Thomas on Injured Reserve with the same left ankle injury that limited him to just six games this season, the Saints have proven they can win without him.

But can they win without any running game at all?

Considering Chris Ivory already is on the IR list, New Orleans basically is left with Reggie Bush and Julius Jones to handle most of the carries. Bush has rushed only 36 times this season for 150 yards, and Jones averages 2.6 yards per carry.

This week, it probably won’t matter, because the Seahaws rank 27th in the league in pass defense.

But without an effective running game – or a running game that can top, say, 50 yards a game – it’s going to be awfully tough to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

can we just have some fan walk-on and play running back instead of letting Bush or Jones do it, I think we'll be better off.

I disagree redskinscott. I don’t care if the Saints have NO healthy running backs, there is no freaking way the Saints lose to Seattle. This could possibly become an issue in the second round and beyond but Seattle is terrible even with a healthy Hasselbeck, which he is not, and they only beat a crappy St. Louis team because of shady officiating and the fact that the Rams receivers dropped every pass thrown for more than 10 yards. Also, given the trend of no name RBs who have come up big recently (Arian Foster, Chris Ivory, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, etc) , I wouldn’t be surprised at all if DeShawn Wynn becomes a big contributor for New Orleans in the playoffs.

This might come as a shock to Saints fans, and I mean no disrespect, but they probably will NOT win the Superbowl this year! I know, it's crazy to think such a thing, but it's probably true.

We've got Bush.... We've got Bush

The Saints are in tough spot, like a beaver trying to swim upstream.  This is not going to be a piece of pie, even if they are facing the Seahawks.  They need to think outside of the box and dig themselves out of this hole.  The answer is Bush.  It has to be.  The man is a running back, so use him as a running back.  The Chargers used Sproles in this way and were successful.  I know it might be like trying to squeeze a square peg in a tight circular hole, but it has to be done.  Bush needs to man up and get down and dirty.  A dirty filthy Bush is what is called for in this situation.  The Saints can't rely on their passing game alone.  I understand their special teams is good, but I am worried another muffed punt return.  We need Bush, but we do not need muffs.  The Seahawks may be an average football team, but they are not kittys.  They should not be taken lightly.  Even if they are down, they can easily come from behind and surprise the Saints, especially in their own stadium.  It's always easier at home than it is on the road.  I can see the Seahawks slide right in to the second round if the Saints are not ready for it.  Anyway, I really do like Bush.
