In yet another ridiculous twist to this "everybody loves and wants Jim Harbaugh" story, the Dolphins have decided NOT to offer him the job and instead will hang onto current coach Tony Sparano, reports FOX’s Jay Glazer.

For Sparano, the news has to come as a relief – or maybe he’s going to be bitter about the whole thing, which would be completely understandable – and it’ll be interesting to see what kind of authority he has around the Dolphins complex. Or if owner Stephen Ross will see fit to give him a raise, considering he’s emasculated him throughout the NFL world.

Harbaugh has become the most in-demand coach around the country, and though Miami is going in another direction (or, technically, the same direction it was already going in), the 49ers and Stanford still are battling hard for his services. John Elway also is on record as saying the Broncos want to meet with Harbaugh about their coaching vacancy, as well.

UPDATE (11:45 p.m.): There's nothing really to confirm this, but the scuttlebutt out there is that Harbaugh is leaning toward returning to Stanford so he can coach Andrew Luck for one more season. That would make sense. Maybe try to compete for a national title and then jump to the NFL with even more leverage.

Plus, there's also the ever-present NFL labor dispute that might put a damper on Harbaugh's desire actually to move to the pros. Some people are theorizing that Harbaugh is using this offseason as a test-driving opportunity to see what's out there and if he eventually does want to make a move to the NFL.

Of course, now that I've typed that, he'll probably accept the 49ers job in about 10 minutes.

Stay tuned.

UPDATE (11:55 p.m.): According to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, the 49ers are not expected to greatly increase their offer beyond about $5 million per year to Harbaugh (it was thought the Dolphins were talking in the neighborhood of $8 million per).

All of a sudden, Harbaugh's leverage is slipping (PLOT TWIST!).

UPDATE (12:22 a.m.):
Glazer is back, tweeting, "Strong signal outta SF that Harbaugh is in strong talks w Niners to get a deal done 2nite over 6 mil per. But w this guy could change again."

Report: Dolphins cease courtship of Harbaugh

Pretty easy to me. Some teams just goes in there and plays and just ignores the crowd.
if you want a hard place to play at talk about USC or Florida or Miami.

lol unbelievable---I meant to win as a coach at Stanford! Not to win as an opponent!
CBS really needs to start taking some accounts away on here.............

Has a coach ever held out in training camp?  'Cause that's exactly what should happen here until Ross gives Sparano the 8 million he was going to give Harbaugh.  Hey, if the players can do it, why not the coaches?

Stephen Ross is obviously not a "football guy". All he seems to care about is celebrity appeal. I'm surprised he didn't go after Al Pacino...he seemed like a good coach on "ANY GIVEN SUNDAY". I was never a huge fan of Wayne Huizenga but at least he seemed to be a little more understanding of the game than this guy. I believe the Dolphins have regressed since Ross has owned the team.

First off parcells is gone anyway, he already resigned from his postion during the season, and didnt take place until after the year. So get ur facts right first, and second its the medias fault that harbaugh is being courted as a good coach, he isnt that good, he coaches in a watered down PAC10;.there myabe 3 teams at most that are good there and 1 happens to be the cardinals...And why the hell would miami keep sparano, hes garbage ive never seen a coach get soooooo damn pumped for a fg when there down 21-3....dude try taking chances and RUN the fuckin ball more the 13 times a game...u had 2 backs that were good, and now rickey is gonna leave cause the poor offense production

Wow--now here's a guy that is really clueless. First off, Parcells is still and advisor for the team and backed Sparano. Second, do you have any idea how hard it is to win at Stanford? This isn't a school that recruits thugs and convicts--they actually have standards. I'm not a huge Pac 10 fan but the the league was clearly better this year. I mean--you're a Big 10 fan right? The same Big 10 who once again embarassed themselves in nearly every bowl game. The Big 10 is pretty much a small step up from Division II at this point--the league pretty much sucks at everything.

dear whitetrash

First off parcells is gone anyway, he already resigned from his postion during the season, and didnt take place until after the year. So get ur facts right first, Get your facts straight my friend.  Parcells is no longer with the team officially but remains a consultant; it came out just the other day how Parcells had saved Sparano's job.  Stop scratching lotto tickets and read a little more before you become combative sweetie.
