UPDATE 4:30 p.m. ET: According to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, Harbaugh’s deal is for five years, $25 million. If this is true, then the 49ers did NOT increase their offer to Harbaugh after he was reportedly close to sticking with Stanford.

----

The AP is reporting that Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh will sign a five-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. A press conference has been scheduled for Friday 6:30 p.m. ET.

This is a somewhat long-expected move for Harbaugh, albeit one that had plenty of twists and turns towards the end. Harbaugh and the Niners brass met for five hours on Wednesday. Late Thursday, Stanford reportedly upped its offer to try and keep the head coach. On Friday, whispers about Harbaugh going to Michigan resurfaced. Earlier in the week, the Denver Broncos expressed interest – and obviously not as much interest as the Miami Dolphins, who sent their top men to California for a face-to-face meeting.

In the end, all the drama only helped to raise Harbaugh’s value. We don’t yet know exactly what that value is, but we do know that by choosing San Francisco, Harbaugh at least saves himself the cost of moving and buying a new house.

This may have been a closer call for the Niners than many realize. A Stanford source told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, "We thought we had Jim locked up last night but Jim wanted to sleep on it." Stanford may never let a head coach hit the hay again.

On the Niners’ side of things, let the discussion begin about whether this is the right hire. The initial chatter around the web seems to be saying YES! But very few college coaches successfully leap to the pro level. Harbaugh, of course, played in the NFL and was an assistant for the Raiders in 2002-03, so credibility and pro culture shouldn’t be issues. Still, Harbaugh is known for his demonstrative style and somewhat cutting personality. College players willingly deal with that. But multimillionaire pros?

Jim Harbaugh picks the 49ers

Last thing the Broncos need is another overhyped unproven coach to replace the one we just got rid of!  The Broncos obviously didn't want him or would have made him a better offer.  Good fit in SF not in Denver!  Stupid Raider fan!

Jim Harbaugh picks the 49ers

No surprise here. It will be tough at first for Harbaugh and the Niners, but it's the right move. There is a great deal of raw talent at several key positions on both sides of the ball- Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, Patrick Willis, Aubrayo Franklin, Isaac Sopoaga. The quarterback issue is obviously a huge problem, but they might be able to get away with not spending a high round draft pick on one until the 2012 draft. Available starters Kyle Orton or Donovan McNabb are reasonable short-term QB solutions for a first year head coach. Kevin Kolb might also be on their radar. A high-round pick on a good cover corner would pay big dividends next season. San Francisco won't be elite next season, but the difference between winning and losing in the NFL is so small that noboby should be surprised if by this time next year the 49ers are in the playoffs.

Jim Harbaugh picks the 49ers

I knew if Harbaugh wanted to go to the NFL it would be the 49ers. I laughed at people who said the Broncos. The 49ers are located in the area him and his family already live in. And also...the 49ers actually have talent!! They need a QB, obviously. However, they have Frank Gore. They have Vernon Davis. They have WR's. They have a nice D. I think Harbaugh made a great decision.

This is going to be interesting. It sure seems like Harbaugh is going to be overpaid in relation to his accomplishments, as the hype made it appear as if this man might just be the second-coming. Fortunately for Harbaugh, I think the Niners are probably much better talent-wise than their record this year indicated this year, due in no small part to Mike Singletary being completely overwhelmed and unsuited to the job. On the otherhand, Harbaugh, a past QB and an excellent teacher and developer of QB's - which might be his best asset - is going to be coaching a team with no real quality player at that position. If the Niners can acquire a decent QB, they may be a playoff caliber team with or without the Holy Harbaugh. I have a feeling the Niners are going to be much better next year simply due to Harbaugh being considerably more competent than Singletary. If's probably going to take a few years to see if Jim is as good as they're making him out to be.

Jim Harbaugh picks the 49ers

This is a curious move by the 49ers. Vernon Davis just admitted that most of the team spent the last year or so playing scared. You know, since Singletary is a loon and all. While Harbaugh is infinitely more qualified than Singletary to be a head coach, their personalities are pretty similar. It's also a surprising move by Harbaugh. Yeah, it's close to his house. Great. Now fans won't have to drive as far to throw dog manure into his yard, which is nice. But the 49ers have the worst ownership of any team outside of Oakland. Jed York is a kid that was handed an NFL franchise to play with like some kids might get a squirt gun or a skateboard. He has no idea what he's doing. We will see how well this goes, but I don't get it.

Well the 49ers get their man, I am sure they are happy about it.  Wonder how much Andrew Luck helped Harbaugh however?  Just saying.  I do think he is a good coach however, I wish him the best of luck in San Fran!
