Nnamdi Asomugha’s contract voided by odd clause

The clause might not actually be "odd" but it surprised even the Oakland Raiders when Nnamdi Asomugha's contract was voided after 2010.

Adam Schefter reported the shocking news on ESPN Sunday and it eliminates the 2011 team option for $16.8 million or the value of the quarterback (yes, quarterback, they make much more on average than cornerbacks) franchise tag, whichever was higher. The Raiders confirmed the nullification of Asomugha's deal Sunday.

"The contract is voided but we have to wait on all the ramifications of the CBA before we really move on from there," Raiders senior executive John Herrera said Sunday, via Jerry McDonald of the Contra Costa Times.

Essentially, Asomugha had to reach certain incentives to keep his contract from being voided. That included either a) playing more snaps in 2010 than 2009 or b) improving upon his interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks from 2009.

Asomugha had a "worse" season in 2010 than 2009, mainly because he only played in 14 games, and his contract was voided and the team's option to either pay or franchise him is no longer there.

That means Asomugha, who's one of the best defensive players in the NFL and, depending on how you feel about Darrelle Revis, possibly the best cornerback in the NFL will be a free agent whenever free agency picks back up after labor negotiations are settled.

And, because he's only 30 years old, he'll probably be picking up a decently-sized contract.

The texans could use him, and Wade might be the one to make a play for big name this offseason!

They go 8 and 8. Best in years. What do they do fire the head coach and now void one of the best players on defense in NFL. Oakland clearly doesn't like heading to be a contender again. Al Davis new slogan is is just lose baby. Committment to losing.

Nnamdi Asomugha’s contract voided by odd clause

So his contract is void... meaning he has no contract with the Oakland Raiders... nor any other team... is he a free agent.. or is he really free meaning its as if he never had a contract in the NFL....this is really great stuff....no nfl no commercials... no tom jackson on espn... and no analysts who have no idea what a football game is.... but one thing this blog says is that this guys contract is void..... blog blog blog.....

I wouldn't mind the Chargers picking him up if he is willing to switch to FS, and they move to Eric Weddle to SS.
They could offer him a 1 year contract with an option at league minimum.

Sorry, just felt this thread needed another stupid comment.

@ the wolf 25.  Not that good considering the Cowgirls are a terrible team.  Asomugha wants to go somewhere he can win.  Not get embarrassed.

Nnamdi Asomugha’s contract voided by odd clause

I would love to see him come on up and move over to the East and tudor McCourty in New England.  I know it is not Belichek style but even he must see the talent there.  Nnamdi seems to be a well rounded individual though and would be great in the room for the young DB's in their system.  Long shot I know that for sure but a man can dream too.  I could see Jerry Jones pulling it off though.  Dallas wants and needs to make a big splash and recovery for next season.  Their defence is the place that needs the most work as well.  Would love to see him in a Patriots jersey but see the Cowboys pushing hard for Nnamdi's services.  Big Al in Raider land will be lost as per usual and feel he could get better value elsewhere?  GO PATS!

Look whoever signs him will have to overpay for him. That leaves out some teams tha could use him. There are only a few teams with the salary cap space available and of those some don't want to spend. The Cowboys would spend, but I don't think they have that space. The Eagles won't pay him over $15 mill a season. I'll bet he stays with the Raiders. They'll pay him and have the room. I for one would love to see him go to the Steelers. Ike Taylor, Bryant McFadden, and William Gay are all free agents next year. I would rather have him than all three of them, but he would cost more than all three so it won't happen.
