The clause might not actually be "odd" but it surprised even the Oakland Raiders when Nnamdi Asomugha's contract was voided after 2010.

Adam Schefter reported the shocking news on ESPN Sunday and it eliminates the 2011 team option for $16.8 million or the value of the quarterback (yes, quarterback, they make much more on average than cornerbacks) franchise tag, whichever was higher. The Raiders confirmed the nullification of Asomugha's deal Sunday.

"The contract is voided but we have to wait on all the ramifications of the CBA before we really move on from there," Raiders senior executive John Herrera said Sunday, via Jerry McDonald of the Contra Costa Times.

Essentially, Asomugha had to reach certain incentives to keep his contract from being voided. That included either a) playing more snaps in 2010 than 2009 or b) improving upon his interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks from 2009.

Asomugha had a "worse" season in 2010 than 2009, mainly because he only played in 14 games, and his contract was voided and the team's option to either pay or franchise him is no longer there.

That means Asomugha, who's one of the best defensive players in the NFL and, depending on how you feel about Darrelle Revis, possibly the best cornerback in the NFL will be a free agent whenever free agency picks back up after labor negotiations are settled.

And, because he's only 30 years old, he'll probably be picking up a decently-sized contract.

Nnamdi Asomugha’s contract voided by odd clause

After watching the New Orleans Saints Secondary play yesterday, they could use the services of Asomugha next year. It would be an upgrade from what they have now. I like Greer and Porter but they need a guy like Revis - someone who can take the no. 1 receiver of any team out of a game.

Nnamdi Asomugha’s contract voided by odd clause

I know it's just wishful thinking, but the Detroit Lions could use and pay for such a talent.  The Lions are on the rise and a piece or two  (some linebacker help) and most offenses out their would have their hands full.

As an aside to one of the comments, the story says he will be a free agent and can't be franchised.

Oh yeah. He could be headed to the Texans to and take pressure off Kareem Jackson and flip him to the other side. Also Texans, are you listening... ??? ...Since we have new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, he's going from the 4-3 to the 3-4, Go get you a linebacker with the #11 overall pic. The boy Vonn out of Texas A&M would be a nice fit!

He has talked to Peyton and joining Colts

One of the reasons Manning has not signed contract. Now #21 is a free agent. Peyton can sign for less and get the best cornerback to play with the best 2 pass rushers.

pgarcia...
Sounds intriguing.  One little issue with that notion, Salary Cap. How do you think the Jets can afford the two highest paid CB's in the league at the same time?  Not going to happen...

Nnamdi Asomugha’s contract voided by odd clause

Watch out because Nnamdi and Revis talked about playing in the same secondary.  If the Jets get him and can develop Kyle Wilson into a nickel back watch out the Jets will be super dominate on defense.
The Jets won't get him.  They have about 7 high profile free agents heading into 2011 and they can't even sign all of them.  That includes Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes.  I don't think you're going to see Mike Tannenbaum shelling out that kind of money for another CB when there will be plenty of other needs to fill.

On the other hand, with Champ Bailey a question mark to return to Denver, I'd love to see Asomugha lining up at corner in blue and orange.  This would negate the need to possibly draft Patrick Peterson out of LSU while paying about the same amount for a younger version of Champ.
