The clause might not actually be "odd" but it surprised even the Oakland Raiders when Nnamdi Asomugha's contract was voided after 2010.

Adam Schefter reported the shocking news on ESPN Sunday and it eliminates the 2011 team option for $16.8 million or the value of the quarterback (yes, quarterback, they make much more on average than cornerbacks) franchise tag, whichever was higher. The Raiders confirmed the nullification of Asomugha's deal Sunday.

"The contract is voided but we have to wait on all the ramifications of the CBA before we really move on from there," Raiders senior executive John Herrera said Sunday, via Jerry McDonald of the Contra Costa Times.

Essentially, Asomugha had to reach certain incentives to keep his contract from being voided. That included either a) playing more snaps in 2010 than 2009 or b) improving upon his interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks from 2009.

Asomugha had a "worse" season in 2010 than 2009, mainly because he only played in 14 games, and his contract was voided and the team's option to either pay or franchise him is no longer there.

That means Asomugha, who's one of the best defensive players in the NFL and, depending on how you feel about Darrelle Revis, possibly the best cornerback in the NFL will be a free agent whenever free agency picks back up after labor negotiations are settled.

And, because he's only 30 years old, he'll probably be picking up a decently-sized contract.

NO, the contract being void also includes the fact that he cannot be Franchised. So he is a free agent and the Raiders cant do anything about it. He is free to go anywhere he can get the money. I think the G-MEN would be a great fit.

You beat me by 1 minute with that comment!! Laughing

Indy's no. 27 could just about stay off the field all day, would not have made any difference. And it was not only on that last play where he was totally out of position. He seemed totally clueless or at least waaay over his head.

The other killer for Indy of course was that running into the kicker penalty, and possibly the timeout call. The kicker penalty was just a plain  dumb effort worth for nothing. And did you see, couple of minutes later he got away with another dumb play, that was pushing the wide receiver when he was already out of bounds. Or just close there... just dumb.

I wanted Indy to win, but the better team won. Give credit were credit is due.

relax. no one even knows what the CBA will be. If everything stays close to the same he probably gets franchised anyway. So i would suggest it is good fodder for the boards, but nothing else.

Nnamdi Asomugha’s contract voided by odd clause

Watch out because Nnamdi and Revis talked about playing in the same secondary.  If the Jets get him and can develop Kyle Wilson into a nickel back watch out the Jets will be super dominate on defense.

Hey broncos, you of all people should know the value of a shutdown corner (champ bailey anyone?).  16 mill is a bit much, sure, but now he is going to walk and they will get nothing in return for him.  What a waste.  A team on the turnaround (for once) now loses its best defensive player.  Ouch.

It's a smart move. There's no way a DB should be taking home $16+ million a year. The Raiders could pickup a decent QB and DB for that price, and It didn't seem to hurt them when he wasn't in the lineup this year. Al Davis get to clean up one of his many bad contracts that he was throwing at player like Tommy Kelly and Javon Walker.

Oh, boy.....They need to send Larry Foote out to see Nnamdi and tell him that winning is way more important than money once you have money!  If we could get him in Steelers Black and Gold that would be awesome!
