We already thought we knew why Andrew Luck wanted to return to Stanford for his red shirt junior year: he wants to stay together one more season with his recruiting class, he wants to finish his degree and, presumably, he wants to try to win a national title.

But Panthers owner Jerry Richardson wanted to make sure there wasn’t another (more nefarious) reason. According to CBS’ own Charlie Casserly on The NFL Today, Richardson called Luck to determine if one reason he wasn’t entering the NFL Draft was because Carolina will get the No. 1 pick.

Reported Casserly: “He was told unequivocally no."

And if Richardson and his personnel people still want to take a QB in the Draft - and here's what our mock draft looks like - here’s Casserly’s list of the top remaining signal-callers that will be available: Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert, Washington’s Jake Locker, Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett and Auburn’s Cam Newton.

But at least this way, Richardson didn’t have his feelings hurt.

I'm sorry Panthersclt,I didn't realize you Panthers fans were so sensitive. I could handle Panthers fans better....if I had ever met one. But since I'm a moron maybe this following comment has no merit...but dumb,ol' CavScout is going to try. You talk about how successful the Panthers are but did you know that the Panthers entered the league in did know that did you? I mean you don't seem to know much else about them but you DO know that, right? And since they entered the league, they have had FOUR winning seasons and THREE .500 seasons. I can't believe you call four winning seasons out of sixteen a successful run. And of course the market there is so supportive they are STILL considering relocating the team to Los Angeles. They haven't really been THAT successful overall in the draft. And when I said a small fanbase,I didn't mean that the fans were bad,but compared to other markets, their just isn't as much money there,so untwist your panties. Are you still with me? I'm not going to fast, right? However I will give credit where credit is due about that fanbase and that is they haven't had a blackout since 2002,however with the almost constant mediocre seasons, how long will that last?

you are exactly right panthersclt...most of the people that post all the negativity about the Panthers don't realize the success the organization has as a whole...the NFL adores the Panthers and the business model that they have developed...they have over 60,000 PSL's sold and if you asked the players who play or have played for the Panthers they will tell you it's a great place to play and live....a top notch stadium in a good climate where fans are passionate, but somewhat "fair weathered"...they also forget that the Panthers are 2 years removed from a 12-4 record and have the youngest team in the NFL....while 2010 was a dreadful year you also have to remember that John Fox took a team that was 1-13 and had them in the Super Bowl in 2 years....the Panthers have a great running back trio with Stewart, Goodson and Williams, a good offensive line(when Jeff Otah is healthy) and a fast, young defense....the Panthers definitely need help at QB & WR, which undoubtedly are two main cogs in a successful offense....they will be back and probably a lot sooner than most people expect...wish Marty Hurney was also axed, but hopefully he will make some better draft decisions this year.

CavScout - You are a freaking moron and no nothing about the Panthers organization or it's fans.  Our franchise has had quite a bit of success since entering the league (3 NFC Championship appearances, 1 Super Bowl appearance).  Our fans reside in the 16th largest TV market in the US.  We are in the top 15 of franchise worth according to Forbes 2010.  Yes, we had a bad year but alot of that was our own doing (lame duck coach, going young, Owner spearheads CBA - lead by example).  Luck in Carolina would have been a good fit.  We already have probably the best running back tandem in the league and an above average defense.  We need to retool but we will be back soon.  You act is if Carolina is the Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns or some bottom feeding team.  Not the case jerk off.  Look at Atlanta, they were just like us two years ago when we topped the division in 2008.  Luck (when he comes out) will play for a bad team regardless (i.e. 1st pick).  I think Carolina would have been the right move for him.

Andrew Luck dodges two incredible hurdles by staying at Stanford.  (1) There will be NO lockout in college and (2) he avoids having to play for Carolina (2012 last place/first pick team may not be any better than Carolina was this year but they certainly wont be worse).  Luck presents himself with two golden opportunities by staying with Stanford. (1) A chance at a National Championship (slim chances IMO though) and (2) Heisman trophey (very good odds of this happening IMO).  I think this is a great year for athletes to decide to stay in college...especially Heisman front-runners.  However, I will take the paycheck EVERYTIME!

He could have been doing the kid a favor. Maybe he wanted to see if Luck would rather be traded to another team. I'm just guessing.  Carolina needs to stick with Clausen until they get an O-line that can block.  Carolina needs to trade the #1 pick for some O-line help.  Otah, Gross and Kalil need help.

First of all,Richardson had no right to grill the kid, second of course he didn't want to go to Carolina, who the hell would. The only place less desirable then Carolina with it's cheapskate owner and small fanbase would be working for that weird, senile dude in Oakland. Of course Luck wasn't going to come right out and say it. I find it kinda sad that Richardson felt the need to call him about it. Buffalo or even DETROIT would be better for him then Carolina.
