UPDATE 3:24 p.m. ET: Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union Tribune says Rivera is expected to be announced as the Panthers’ new head coach on Tuesday.

UPDATE 4:15 p.m. ET: According to Jason La Canfora of NFL.com, if Rivera is hired (as expected), either San Francisco's Greg Manusky or Cleveland's Rob Ryan could be hired as defensive coordinators. Both have ties to Panthers GM Marty Hurney. For offensive coordinator, La Canfora believes that Ron Turner (currently with the Colts but best known as former OC of the Bears) or Chargers tight end coach Rob Chudzinski would be the leading candidate.
----------
It looks like Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera will become the next head coach of the Carolina Panthers. According to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, the Panthers are calling other candidates who interviewed for the job and telling them that the club is going in a different direction.

According to Glazer, the Panthers are mentioning to other candidates that Rivera did well in his interview. He recently met with team officials for the second time.

Rivera, 49, has been a much-ballyhooed defensive assistant since 1997. He has experience running a 4-3 Tampa 2 based scheme from his days in Chicago and experience overseeing a 3-4 from his time in San Diego. And because he has no head coaching experience, he carries a lighter price tag that the small-market Panthers prefer.

@firstchance1    As a Panther's fan I hope you do sell your PSL because you obviously don't know football very well.  Ron Rivera will make a great coach here.

How are you not impressed?  Ron Rivera is a very good, defensive minded coach.  He's a schemer and I'm down for anyone who can own Peyton Manning like he has.

I was hoping my Broncos were going to hire Rivera.  He is a very good defensive minded coach.  Lets see who they hire as offensive coordinator.  I think Rivera will be a good hire.

With Rivera going it still not to late to dump Turner - let's get Gruden or Cowher - With Rivers as QB and decent defense who wouldn't want to take over the Bolts!

As a Panthers fan...not impressed, at all. Wish I could sale my PSL's but I would have to pay someone to take them. Another lame decision by a lame front office. Marty Hurney needs to go and the other 52% need to get rid of Richardson to protect their investment.

Good for Ron Rivera, He will make it to the position he has wanted form many years. This is a win for Carolina and a BIG LOSS for San Diego. Lets hop that some of his knowledge and apporach has rubbed off on the other SD coaches.
