The Browns have officially announced that they’ve hired Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmer as their next head coach.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to join an organization with such a rich history and tradition as the Cleveland Browns,” Shurmur said in a statement.  “I have the utmost respect for Coach (Mike) Holmgren and Tom Heckert, and I am impressed with the direction in which they have this franchise going.  I have known Tom for most of my pro coaching career, and while we were in Philadelphia, he and I developed an outstanding relationship.  I want to thank Mike and Tom, as well as Randy Lerner, for this tremendous opportunity.  I also want to thank the St. Louis Rams and Steve Spagnuolo for two terrific seasons and for giving me a chance to be a coordinator at this level.  I am looking forward to this challenge and can’t wait to get started in helping to build the Browns back to one of the elite teams in the NFL.”

Said Holmgren, team president: “I am extremely excited about having Pat Shurmur as the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Pat is a bright, young man who grew up in football and around the coaching profession.  I came away from our interview very impressed with him as a person, his extensive knowledge of the game and his track record of success as an assistant coach in this league. Most importantly, I feel as though he possesses the necessary qualities which make him the right man to lead our football team.”

In Shurmur, the Browns get an experienced veteran who helped turn around a 1-15 Rams squad and helped them become a team which, shockingly, was only one game – and one victory over the Seahawks - away from making the postseason as the NFC West champs.

The play of rookie QB Sam Bradford was impressive this year, so Shurmur gets credit for that. Overall, the Rams ranked 26th in the NFL in total offense (25th in rushing and 21st in passing). In 2009, St. Louis was No. 29, so props for a little improvement.

Shurmur officially will be introduced Friday at 11 a.m.

Browns hire Pat Shurmur as head coach

This where Mike Holmgren is defintely going to put his West-Coast stamp on the Browns offense. Not only he going to pull the "puppet strings" on Pat Shurmur, I wouldn't be surprised if he will be drawing up the 300-500 page playbook in the off-season for Shurmur.

With the Philly/Cleveland relationship going, it would not be a surprise to see Kevin Kolb wearing the Brown and Orange at some point!!!

Browns hire Pat Shurmur as head coach

Big_Bubs - Thanks for the info.  Not familiar with the guy at all.  Did he also have that responsibility?  I mean, frankly, if I'm touting my credential as a coach, I'd say I aided in the development of McNabb before saying that I aided in the development of Bradford.  Not saying Bradford won't be excellent, but as of yet, he's simply had an above average rookie season, whereas McNabb has led a team to a SB.

Browns hire Pat Shurmur as head coach

Holmgren never hired Mangini. Therefore this is his fire HC hire under him.

So you are telling me that if the Browns went 11-5 this year, Mangini still would have been fired because he isn't Holmgren's "man"? That's BS. If the Browns would have had a decent record, Mangini would still be the head coach regardless of whether or not Holmgren hired him.

Browns hire Pat Shurmur as head coach

Time will tell...that's what Browns' fans have been enduring since they became an expansion team after Fart Modell pulled up stakes. I am bored and impatient with the Cleveland "rebuilding" process. Holmgren now has the Head Coach he's been looking for.  Hopefully the Browns can get some better talent as well. Welcome to the AFC North Coach Shurmur. Put your chinstrap on.
GO BROWNS!
