UPDATE 4:50 p.m. EST: Jay Glazer of FOX Sports says Jim Mora. Jr. is interviewing in Denver. Mora is also still pondering Philadelphia.

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, fired Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has found a new home: Carolina. McDermott interviewed in Denver over the weekend but will assume a role on Ron Rivera’s new staff. Rivera’s defensive pedigree likely means that McDermott will merely ride shotgun, rather than drive the Panthers’ defense.

As for who will replace McDermott in Philadelphia…

According to Jeff McLane and Jonathan Tamari of the Philadelphia Inquirer, there are three candidates for the now-vacant defensive coordinator job: Jim Mora Jr., Dick Jauron and Bill Davis. Mora and Jauron both have head coaching experience (Mora with the Seahawks and Falcons…where he coached Eagles star quarterback Michael Vick; Jauron with the Bills, Bears and, briefly, Lions). Davis was most recently the defensive coordinator in Arizona.

The interview process has not begun, as Andy Reid is on vacation. Reid may need to hurry home, though, because Jauron’s name, along with Dave Wannstedt’s, has surfaced in Cleveland. Then again, Jauron is already on Philly’s staff as the secondary coach, so don’t expect Reid to be in the dark about his happenings.

The Eagles want experience at Jim Johnson’s old D coordinator post. Strictly in that sense, Jauron would be the best fit. Davis is a surprise contender, as the Cardinals ranked near the bottom in every major defensive category this season. They did, however, finish first in red zone defense, an area where the Eagles were awful in historic proportions.

The more I think about it, they should talk Brian Dawkins into retiring and give him the DC job. He was Weapon X and truly made the Eagles D something to be feared. Who better than to become a new DC? Add Hugh Douglas as an assistant and you've got a new defensive coaching staff. Sounds like a better plan than anything they've got a shot at now. No Eagles fan wants some tired ass coach that aint gonna get anything done on defense. Bring em back and let a true warrior bring that pathetic D back to life! Listen up and there's the Birds future.

Jimmy Johnson's Eagles defense died with him and Mcdermott was just an imposter who happened to land the gig of his lifetime. He will never be a great DC or coach for that matter because he was/is trying to use someone else's schemes with his own ineffective twists. How many of JJ's ASSistants have taken his defense around the league? It's common knowledge now and needs a complete overhaul. Eagles should find someone who has their OWN plan and can convince the players to FOLLOW their plan. They need to do on defense what they did on offense... get some younger players to mold into their new defense. Stop drafting 5'10" CB's! Get bigger, faster, and younger. Simple enough, I can wait a couple years till it all comes together.

Funny, Funny! It is McDermott's  defense and Ried's offense?  Coach Reid is responsible for ALL aspects of coaching.

This is the most inane comment I've ever read. So Andy Reid's inability to commit to the run accounts for the worst redzone defense in 20 years in the entire NFL? Or a pathetic pass rush from the front four?

Your hatred for Reid (Which is just absurd considering his resume) masks the reality that McDermott's defensive units were some of the worst in the NFL based on some key stats in 2009 and 2010. He was overwhelmed in key spots and the fact that the "D" couldn't stop Joe freaking Webb in a major game that cost us a trip to the NFC Championship game ultimately - is all you need to know.

Look at the 2010 schedule too. Our opponents scored 24+ points regularly. It was depressing. McDermott might be bright and hard working but with this offense - we need a legit D Coordinator to take us to the promised land. Then all you Andy Reid haters can pipe down.

Also - please look at the numbers - Andy Reid's offense averaged almost 400 yards of total offense this year and was in the top 5 in the NFL in total yards and scoring.

Andy Reid fired his D-Coordinator because he thinks his DC is responsible for the Eagles inability to have a balanced offense attack in any important game. God forbid Andy ever looks in the mirror and realizes that he can't coach his way out of a wet paper bag if the game has any significance at all.  Every year Eagles fans have to ask the same question -- "why doesn't he realize we need to run the ball?"
You need to shorten the game when you play against an offense like Green Bay and let your D get some rest - 3 passes and a punt doesn't accomplish that.  Add to that all of the injuries the D suffered this year and too many of Fat Andy's draft picks not meeting his expectations and boom, fire the DC

Dick Jauron brings experience, but he is to laid back for the Philly D-coordinator job. The Eagles are an attacking defense for the last decade. Jauron will bring his bend don't break attitude and the Philly fans will want his head in week one. HORRIBLE fit for the Eagles.
