The wait is over -- Hue Jackson has been named the new head coach of the Oakland Raiders on Monday night, the team announced. Jackson's now the sixth (!) head coach of the Bay-Area franchise since 2003.

Jackson's been expected to be named the head coach ever since Jan. 4, when the Raiders announced they wouldn't pick up Tom Cable's option. But things have progressed at a typical Raiders-style pace until it was finally reported by multiple outlets (Michael Smith of ESPN was first) that Jackson had been hired.

It appears that Al Davis finally made up his mind, however, and made a move (coincidentally one day after it was reported that he docked Cable, $120,000 during the 2010 season). Davis was lured to Jackson based primarily on Oakland's improvement on offense since Jackson took over last year -- after taking over the playcalling duties from Cable, Jackson helped the Raiders double their scoring output from 2009.

Al Saunders is the expected candidate to fill the role from which Jackson was promoted -- offensive coordinator -- and while the Raiders' lag time meant many people were scooped off the coaching-staff pile of names, Jackson's been calling around about forming a staff for a week or so.

More importantly, we can finally put our Coaching Hot Seat Tracker to rest (at least until next year) as every NFL team has filled the position.

Amazingly, as Tim Kawakami points out on Twitter, this is Al Davis' 11th consecutive head coaching hire that followed the pattern of alternating between offensive coordinator and offensive-line coach (Mike Shanahan was an OC, Art Shell was a line coach, Mike White - OC, Joe Bugel - OL, Jon Gruden - OC, Bill Callahan - OL, Norv Turner - OC, Art Shell - OL, Lane Kiffin - OC, Tom Cable - OL, Jackson - OC). That's a terrifying amount of predictability from such a kooky character.

Well who will be next coach of Raiders? It's only a few short years away for Jackson to be fired. As long as Davis is still calling the shots no coach will last. Cable did best job of any Coach in years in 2010 and gets fired by Al lol.

Good luck HGue.  You deserve this promotion.  I just hope that working for Crazy Al doesn't ruin your career.

This is funny to me. Because I'm willing to bet he only got this information from the Raiders website, just like every other media outlet or its a rerun story from another media source. How many times do you read about the Raiders making a move, and they say its because they saw it in the transaction page of the website?

They don't have sources in Oakland, no one does. They just look at the website, and Michael Smith was the first to read it. Not even a couple minutes after I saw the story pop up last night I checked the Raiders website and it was there.

Hopefully Hue gets some time to get this team ready to go for next year, I'm optimistic on the upcoming draft. This team is close to getting the next level again, I think a few additions and they will be looking good. I'm just hoping Mr. Davis will back off with the micromanaging enough to let Hue just go for it and see if he was the right choice and has the gift to be a head coach. I love the Raiders, we are a Raider family, my daughter is learning the difference between a 3-4 and 4-3 defense, and she's only 13 monthes old. She cheers with daddy on gameday for this team, Mr. Davis please give this man a chance to get this team back to the post-season.

GO RAIDERS

I think Cable is an overrated coach.  With all the talent the Raiders have, and playing in the AFCW, going 8-8 shouldn't be some sort of COTY candidate type job that guarantees you a job.  Once they got rid of JeMarcus Russell they were pretty much a .500 team at least, not really a surprise.  If they still had Rob Ryan and had a better HC, and if they didn't have to keep playing Jason Campbell because of injuries, the Raiders should have won that division.  Didn't they destroy the division winners twice?  How the heck did the Chiefs win that division anyway?

I dont understand why Tom Cable was let go...he had the raiders actually playing hard and heading in the right direction.
That might be true, but cable and the team never overcame the coaches fight before the season started.  Seemed like cable was guilty as h e l l , and then nobody was talking about it.  I think he did get physical, it got out of hand, and then he came out of it looking like a thug and a thousand times worse than when he first got the coffin....I mean the job.
Good riddance to Cable.

Ok so now Hue's head coach. I'm fine with that. He was promoted mainly because Al 'Senile" Davis liked how the offense improved under him. So he makes him the Raiders 6th head coach in 8 yrs. and supposedly will now hire Al Saunders or whoever as a new OC. My question is, will the offense be as productive with some one else calling the plays? I realize Hue has a head set on, but it's not going to be the same. We can only hope. ps. AL PLEASE PACK IT IN! Favre filed retirement papers, how bout you do it too?

It's awesome to see another Glendale CC Vaquero make the big time! I wonder if anyone has ever kept track of how many former GCC players have played or coached in the NFL....I can think of at least 5 alone from the '86-'87 teams.....Great Job Huey!

Hue Jackson. Isn't that the dude who played Wolverine in the X-Men movies?

The Raiders did have a pretty good offense this season and Al loves him some O.
