From Day One, everyone in the Steelers organization has marveled at how center Maurkice Pouncey handled his business like a 10-year veteran. The first-round rookie from Florida immediately grasped Bruce Arians’ system. After capturing a starting job – which is virtually unheard of for a Steelers rookie…not even LaMarr Woodley or Troy Polamalu started their first seasons – Pouncey assumed the role of the “bad cop” leader and tone-setter. It’s common to see the first-year pro jawing with opponents and coming to the defense of any teammate whom an opponent so much as looks at funny.

If there was any doubt about Pouncey’s veteran savvy, take a look at this clip from his first playoff game. Watch closely and see if you spot anything fishy. (An explanation is provided below.)

Did you notice that the ball was snapped from a few feet in front of where it was initially spotted? Before you cry Cheater! and Scoundrel! understand that centers have been pulling this trick since the dawn of time. Or at least since football became a sport. The best I ever saw at this was Tom Nalen, the longtime Broncos center. That could change if Pouncey keeps gaining first downs like this.

Hmm. I had to watch it twice to catch it, but they gained some inches, not "a few feet".  Most (all?) centers adjust the ball a few inches to hike each time.  The forward progress this time was magnified by the fact that Pouncey had 2 chances to reset.  It's the officials' fault, the ball should have been re-spotted after the fake challenge by Baltimore (Supposedly Harbaugh thought Pittsburgh earned a 1st down on the previous play; but that gave the D time to be ready for the 4th & 1).  Honestly, I think the hurry-up of that pre-snap helped. Maurkice is good, for sure - why else would Pittsburgh pick him 18th overall! You have to go back to 1999 for a Center drafted sooner.  This guy will anchor a few more championships for the Steelers.  Interesting fact for the day - he was born LaShawn but uses his middle name.

Maurkice Pouncey's crafty trick

Interesting story but the whole suggestion of cheating is only partially correct.  The bottom line is the QB got more yardage than the yardage needed from the ORIGINAL ball position.  So even if Pouncey moved the ball, which is legal, he didn't cheat as to give the team the first down.  If BR had not moved the ball the distance from the original spot to the first down stick, then you might call it cheating.  Either way, the official was responsible for spotting the ball in the correct position before the center was allowed to take over.  He did not.  Nice try CBS (Andy Benoit) in attempting to persuade haters to call Steelers cheaters.  Almost every center in the NFL moves the ball forward.

I would have loved to see the Seahawks draft this guy, I believe he's one of the better centers to come out of college in quite a few years.

A few feet?  I think saying he moves it A foot is pushing it.  I don't think it's a big deal, but I guess games can be decided on inches.
