Jets think Hines Ward is rather dirty

In the debate about whether Steelers WR Hines Ward is a tough, gritty, blue-collar WR who makes hard, but clean blocks on defenders or a dirty, cowardly head hunter, I usually lean toward the former.

I’m pretty sure a wide variety of players – like Jets LB Bart Scott, Ravens S Ed Reed and Bengals LB Keith Rivers, all of whom have been hammered by Ward – would disagree with my assessment.

You can add Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine to the list.

“Our guys I think called him the toughest guy in the league when nobody’s looking,” Pettine said, via ESPN New York.

Considering Ward was voted by his peers in Sports Illustrated as the dirtiest player in the league, Pettine’s comment might have some merit. That doesn’t mean the “tough, gritty, blue collar” thing is wrong, though.

“That works for them,” Pettine said. “He’s kind of the spark that gets them going and we are well aware of it.”

Ed Reed and that Baltimore defense got what they deserved when Hines planted him. If you remember correctly, that's the same Ravens defense that put a bounty out on Hines and Mendenhall not very long ago. If you're gonna act tough and talk tough, you better be tough. Hines is and he will always back it up.

The Jets are unoriginal. People have been calling Hines dirty for the longest time... I expect better lip flapping than this. We only get a comment from a def coordinator that only implies that Hines is dirty. Weak sauce.

T.O. is as good a blocker as Hines Ward is, if not better.
No way, I've never seen TO knock anyone out of a game like Hines Ward did (Ed Reed at that too). The dirty players get a blindside angle on a player and plant them, Hines Ward generally doesn't do it that way, most of the time the victim sees him coming.

I never dismissed Ward as a slouch. He's arguably the best Steelers WR ever. I remember the tail end of the 70's and I say Ward is a better all around WR than Swann and Stallworth. However, Ward isn't what he was a few years ago. Revis is in his prime and is the best physical corner since your boy Woodson. Advantage Revis.

Pretty decent commute to Quantico I assume. I give you credit for service if that is the case. I'm aware Fairfax and Prince William have money. Personally, I prefer my home. Pike County, PA. Reasonable PA taxes with NYC income . Can hunt on my property and get to NYC in a little over an hour. That's perfect for me. Pike is the fastest growing county in PA. I bought property there in the 90's when it was considered rural. Now, it's all NYC transplants and property values are escalating due to that. I'll happily look forward to cashing out on my investment in the future.

Ya right, Revis may be the next one pile driven into the turf if he doent watcch out. Revis will stay as far away for Hines as possible. Your funny.

Your comments may have been the BEST description of Hines ever. We say it all the time here in pgh. He is just like the city. Tough gritty and nasty. He is Jack Lambert of the offense. He crushed Ed Reed last week and pile drove him into the turf legally and 3 guys jump on top of him and start hitting him with there fists. And Hines gets a penalty. Hines laughed about it. Reed didnt. It was great and set the tone for the Steelers for the rest of the day. Jets are next. Go Hines and Go Steelers.
