Jets think Hines Ward is rather dirty

In the debate about whether Steelers WR Hines Ward is a tough, gritty, blue-collar WR who makes hard, but clean blocks on defenders or a dirty, cowardly head hunter, I usually lean toward the former.

I’m pretty sure a wide variety of players – like Jets LB Bart Scott, Ravens S Ed Reed and Bengals LB Keith Rivers, all of whom have been hammered by Ward – would disagree with my assessment.

You can add Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine to the list.

“Our guys I think called him the toughest guy in the league when nobody’s looking,” Pettine said, via ESPN New York.

Considering Ward was voted by his peers in Sports Illustrated as the dirtiest player in the league, Pettine’s comment might have some merit. That doesn’t mean the “tough, gritty, blue collar” thing is wrong, though.

“That works for them,” Pettine said. “He’s kind of the spark that gets them going and we are well aware of it.”

Jets think Hines Ward is rather dirty

Is it dirty when a safety lines up a WR who doesn't see him, and dislodges him from the ball with a hit that has Boomer, Tom, Key and Ditka screaming "YOU GOT JACKED-UP"? No, it's no. So why is it dirty when an offensive player plays with the same mentality?
Great post. I'm the furthest thing from a Pittsburgh fan, and anybody that reads anything I say on these boards knows I don't like that team and never have.  But to call Hines Ward dirty is flat out stupid. The only reason his peers voted him the dirtiest in the league is because there are very few offensive players, especially wide receivers that sacrifice their body like he does.  I would take 3 Hines Ward type receivers on my team any time.

And yeah, it's amazing how a safety or db can line up a wide reciever and knock him out and everybody calls it a great play.  Even though the receiver was going for the ball and wasn't even looking, it's ok to do that.  But the second a wide reciever hits somebody that isn't looking it's dirty?

No way.

Jets think Hines Ward is rather dirty

Can you get the story right idiot (Katzowitz)! Mike Pettine didn't make any direct comments about how he personally felt about Ward. He was quoting Antonio Cromartie (who you left out of the article BTW) who said "Ward is the toughest guy in the league when nobody's looking". You also mentioned Bart Scott in your article who said nothing about Hines Ward. Yet you project that Scott feels the same way as Pettine. How would you know how Scott feels about Hines Ward? BTW, Sports Illustrated conducted a survey and voted Hines Ward the dirtiest player in the NFL. So that's the general consensus shared by the NFL, not just the Jets. You media jerks are really desperate this week to get headlines from the Jets. Get your facts straight moron before you write another article! Meanwhile, the Jets will do their talking on the field as they have the last 2 weeks...

If you play the game of football long enough, you will get your mouthpiece knocked out a few times.  As a defensive back or linebacker, you have to be aware of something called a "crackback" block.  Generally, this happens when a sweep or option is going the way of the wide receiver and he turns in to seal the linebacker who is not paying attention and going for outside containment.  The receiver hits him on his outside shoulder and it usually leads to bruised/broken ribs, the wind knocked out of you, etc.  This is completely legal.  Obviously, you can not use your forearm to the head or helmet to the head or anything like that, but you have to remember the league just started cracking down on that with the "Hines Ward" rule.  They made the rule because of him.  He is a physical guy.  He's not dirty.  He plays to the whistle.  Don't stand around the pile and be wary of the crackback and you won't have a problem.  It's football, not Red Rover.  Suck it up, New York.

Quite the rant Packer Fan. Peppers knocks out Rodgers and you will lose. I was neutral on my rooting interests until I read your post. It is the 25th anniversary for Da Bears after all. Bears fortunes will continue to Dallas before losing to the Jets.

I love the fact that the Jets are talking crap about a 6ft 200 lb WR. The one everyone considers dirty is James Harrisson. Talk a little smack about that dude JETS, your quarterback and half the offense will leave the field on a stretcher. Jets just can't take gettin blown up by an offensive player. Pansies

Jets think Hines Ward is rather dirty

35yrMetFan, to me it comes down to this. If he's not on your team, he's dirty. If he plays for you, he plays hard, and to till the whistle is blown. I played football, and it's called "taking a shot" when you are on defense. Is he supposed to run in front of the defender waving his hand so that he sees him before he hits him? The bottomline is if you don't want to get coldcocked by #86, stay alert. If they don't, my high school coach called it "knocking their d**k in the dirt"!
