Not a bad stretch of months for Cundiff

From the underdog to winning the job in the preseason to the starting K spot for the Ravens to a surprisingly fantastic season to the Pro Bowl and now to a long-term contract extension. Yep, it’s been a pretty good year for Ravens K Billy Cundiff.

Although a new contract isn’t complete, NFL.com writes Cundiff will be rewarded for his season with a new long-term deal.

Cundiff Cundiff previously had kicked pretty well for the Cowboys in 2004 and 2005, but since then, he's had stints with three teams, including the Ravens.

It was thought Shayne Graham was the favorite to win the kicking job for Baltimore this preseason, but Cundiff surprised observers by beating him (things worked out OK for Graham as well – he kicked extremely well for the Patriots).

On the season, Cundiff made 26 of 29 field goals (89.7 percent), and he was rewarded with a trip to the Pro Bowl. But perhaps most impressively was this stat: he tied the NFL record with 40 touchbacks this season.

Even more impressive than that: the man with whom he shares the record, former Vikings K Mitch Berger, kicked the vast majority of his touchbacks while playing in a dome. Cundiff did not.

Just thought it was worth mentioning that Mitch Berger was a punter first and foremost.

I agree. Cundiff and Koch is a good K/P combo. Good for the Ravens and Jim Harbaugh for rewarding the players who deserve it. He recognizes a solid kicker is hard to come by and a weapon. Especially when he can keep an opponent on the 20 yard line all game.

As for any other Kicker and Punter combos in the league close to this: Shane Lechler has said he wants out of Oakland...again...because of the firing of Tom Cable, and believes the Raiders will lose a ton of other free agents due to the firing. They have a league high 29 players set to be free agents this offseason. So they may not have competition for the Ravens in that department for long.

Congrats Billy

Cundiff is a graduate of Drake University where he was also on the basketball team.

Playing his last two games of the season in Cleveland and Cincinatti made getting touchbacks extremely difficult later in the year. It's a testament to the strength of Cundiff's leg that he tied the record, and it's good that the Ravens are bringing him back in. It's hard to say that any team in the league has a much better K/P combo than the Ravens with Cundiff and Koch. The Raiders are the one team taht might have a better combo in Lechler and Janikowski.
