Report: Dick LeBeau a 'free agent' after 2010

We hear all the time about players who are potential free agents. (Case in point: Peyton Manning, who doesn't have a contract for 2011 ... yet.) But what about the coaches? Case in point: Dick LeBeau, who's contract will reportedly expire following the 2010.

LeBeau, the Hall of Fame player (there's a distinction, and he's in for playing, but "not for coaching") who also happened to architect Pittsburgh's vaunted defense, will be a free agent after this season, according to ESPN.

There appear to be three possible outcomes from LeBeau hitting the market. One, he returns to the Steelers. Two, he retires. And three, he heads to Arizona.

The return to Pittsburgh is obvious, because he's had so much success there and the personnel in place is ideal for his system.

The retirement is a possibility because, as youthful as LeBeau still looks, he's 73.

And Arizona makes sense, because the Cardinals were terrible on defense in 2010, have former Steelers coaches Ken Wisenhunt and Russ Grimm on staff in the desert and don't currently have a defensive coordinator. (Also, old people go to the desert when they want to step away from work and play more golf, so that makes sense too.)

If LeBeau did jump to Arizona, he'd have his work cut out for him, but engineering a turnaround for that defense would be possible -- just not easy -- and would provide a pretty nice cherry on top of LeBeau's already superb career.

If the Steelers win the Super Bowl this year, there is not a chance in hell that he would leave. The Pitt fans would riot if the front office let him walk.

What a non-story.

#1 - he already said he doesn't want to be a head coach again

#2 - his entire Defense lobbied his way into the HOF

#3 - there is no salary cap on coaches - i.e. The Steelers can top any monetary offer another team would make.

steelers=sb and gambitto, you obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

The Cardinals aren't a complete rebuilding project. They have three Pro Bowlers (Dockett, Rodgers-Cromartie, and Wilson) and an all-Pro (Rhodes), who are all still in their primes or approaching them. They also have some good young players in Williams and Campbell, with a couple of others like Toler, Washington and Schofield showing a lot of potential. If they get some LB help, which is their big weakness right now, this is a D with a ton of potential. Also, this is an organization that has two division titles and a SB appearance in the past 3 years, and plays in a VERY weak division and the weaker of the two conferences. This team is ripe for a quick turnaround if they can find a QB, and the Bidwills have shown Graves and Whisenhunt a ton of support the past few years.

However, that being said, I don't see why LeBeau would want to leave Pittsburgh, unless he's forced out. But they might be coming to a choosing point between LeBeau and Butler, and with LeBeau 73 and near retirement, it might be time to let him go and let Butler, with a much longer future ahead of him, take over before they risk losing him.

Pats aren't relevant anymore. They don't win playoff games. Enjoy watching the Steelers in the Super Bowl chump.

This guy can probably write his own ticket to anywhere he wants to go.

But I don't see him leaving for some reason.

*I'd hateHe won't get much better then the Steelers. Tomlin gives him full control and the personnel is already perfect and the players have the utmost respect for him.
