UPDATE 2:45 p.m. EST: Lovie Smith said Cutler has a sprained MCL. A sprain is the same as a minor tear. Smith also said that Cutler is a tough guy.

----------

Sounds like a slew of former NFL players and overactive Twitter users might owe Jay Cutler an apology. According to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun Times, the Bears quarterback suffered an MCL tear in Sunday’s NFC Championship game.

Doctors are still determining the grade of the tear. It’s worth noting that the grade of the MCL tear is significant. A tear can sometimes be another word for “sprain”.

Because Cutler was simply standing on the sideline and not getting treatment on his knee during the second half Sunday, many outside observers (who, of course, could not feel Cutler’s pain) were quick to criticize his toughness and heart.

Though the initial harsh reaction to Cutler’s injury was startling (how often do NFL players get questioned like this?), it wasn’t unprecedented. LaDainian Tomlinson went through a similar ordeal a few years ago when a knee injury kept him out of playoff action. Tomlinson’s knee injury just happened to be an MCL.

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

Players (former & present) will always question the toughness of their counterparts and they have every right to do so however when looking at the bigger picture we should consider Jay Cutler's inability to lead the Bears offense against the Packers.  Third string QB Caleb Hanie actually made this a game and although some will always question Lovie Smith I agree with his decision to put him in the game after 2nd string Todd Collins proved ineffective.  What is surprising is that neither Hanie or Collins received any help from the injured Cutler.

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

Cutler may be a jerk, but I think many people (including idiot NFL players on Twitter) foolishly jumped to the wrong conclusion and questioned Cutler's "toughness"...Just because he can stand, that means he can play? Really?

The only bum around here is you! Cutler's numbers alone prove you wrong. With a shotty offensive line and short weak receivers he still put up the best numbers any Chicago Bears quaterback ever has. YOU SHUT UP and go back to your couch. BBBBBBBBBBBOOOOYA!

All I have to say is wasn't Jones-Drew the guy who sat out the last few games because of a hurt knee? His team was playing for a chance at the playoffs and he sits out. Now he thinks he has a right to ask about Cutler's toughness? What a joke. The little man better look in the mirror first before spewing his thoughts for all to see. What a hypocrite.

I don't get it I guess?
I didn't question that he was injured and I didn't think he should be waving pom-poms.
Ok I get that he couldn't play, BUT he could still walk, see, hear, and talk and Hanie could of used some help on the sidelines from him and wanted it. Most starting qb's who go out injured, do help out their back-ups. The qb position is the most important job on the field, Hanie wanted some advice from Cutler and on camera Jay shunned Hanie. It's there on tape to be seen by all.
That to me is the most disgusting part of Cutler's persona. Nothing else.
Cutler should still be the Bears' starting qb though, no doubt.

Yeah man, you can't question another man's pain.  One time, I spilled hot coffee on my desk and it got all over my pinky finger.  My boss was PISSED when I sat out of our logistics "shorts" meeting, but he had no idea just how bad my pinky was feeling.  I had to hold my hand above my head for like 5 minutes.  I feel you Jay, I feel you.

Not really defending him but I want to get a few more facts out there so you can make your own opinion. Philip Rivers was able to play because he took a cortisone shot for pain. Unfortunately Jay Cutler is a Type 1 diabetic and cortisone shots are potentially lethal to him. You can look that up like I did because I didn't believe it myself.  He did come out first series in the second half but he was causing more harm to the team being out on the field.

and although I don't like his body language it is consistent with Jay Cutler.  He doesn't really get emotional win or lose.

All in all Packers won the first half, Bears won the second half, Packers won the game.
