UPDATE 2:45 p.m. EST: Lovie Smith said Cutler has a sprained MCL. A sprain is the same as a minor tear. Smith also said that Cutler is a tough guy.

----------

Sounds like a slew of former NFL players and overactive Twitter users might owe Jay Cutler an apology. According to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun Times, the Bears quarterback suffered an MCL tear in Sunday’s NFC Championship game.

Doctors are still determining the grade of the tear. It’s worth noting that the grade of the MCL tear is significant. A tear can sometimes be another word for “sprain”.

Because Cutler was simply standing on the sideline and not getting treatment on his knee during the second half Sunday, many outside observers (who, of course, could not feel Cutler’s pain) were quick to criticize his toughness and heart.

Though the initial harsh reaction to Cutler’s injury was startling (how often do NFL players get questioned like this?), it wasn’t unprecedented. LaDainian Tomlinson went through a similar ordeal a few years ago when a knee injury kept him out of playoff action. Tomlinson’s knee injury just happened to be an MCL.

All you idiots questioning this guy's toughness -- what do you have to say now??

MJD--hope you enjoyed watching the playoffs from your couch.

This guy has taken a huge beating the last two seasons playing behind a garbage offensive line.

If he couldn't play then he couldn't play.  Don't question a mans heart and integrity until you walk a mile in his shoes.  Yeah maybe he could have dawned the POM POMS and cheared his team to a victory.   I hope the packers win the SB.

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

>>>For two years Cutler has gotten his brains bashed in behind an offensive line that couldn't start in college and people have criticized him for everything from his facial expressions to his lack of passion

Only because he holds onto the ball...and holds it.... and holds it....

But in a sense this is a moot point. Cutler was playing lousy. Why "gut it out" when you know you can 't play as good as the 3rd stringer.

Hopefully Caleb Hainey has found a starting job on the Bears next season.

So now people are switching from questioning his toughness to his body language and casual demeanor. Did y'all get lost on the way to the Lifetime network website?

I apologize to J. Cutler for thinking he was a puss.  Thanks for a good season, and good luck Steelers.

Wow, don't see that much. Kudos to that post.

Great post itasca.
I agree 100%.
Cutler can obviously take physical abuse, but I too believe he could of helped Hanie alot yesterday on the sidelines.
Sorta unfair to question his toughness by all these so-called tv experts & NFL players, but his lack of emotion or caring on the sidelines was very evident.
Again Cutler is his own worst enemy, or at least it really appears that way.
