UPDATE 2:45 p.m. EST: Lovie Smith said Cutler has a sprained MCL. A sprain is the same as a minor tear. Smith also said that Cutler is a tough guy.

----------

Sounds like a slew of former NFL players and overactive Twitter users might owe Jay Cutler an apology. According to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun Times, the Bears quarterback suffered an MCL tear in Sunday’s NFC Championship game.

Doctors are still determining the grade of the tear. It’s worth noting that the grade of the MCL tear is significant. A tear can sometimes be another word for “sprain”.

Because Cutler was simply standing on the sideline and not getting treatment on his knee during the second half Sunday, many outside observers (who, of course, could not feel Cutler’s pain) were quick to criticize his toughness and heart.

Though the initial harsh reaction to Cutler’s injury was startling (how often do NFL players get questioned like this?), it wasn’t unprecedented. LaDainian Tomlinson went through a similar ordeal a few years ago when a knee injury kept him out of playoff action. Tomlinson’s knee injury just happened to be an MCL.

Cutler's toughness may not be the question. However his heart and determination coupled with leadership can certainly be questioned and rightly so. For somebody to not show any emotion on the sideline, to not even try to get back in the game is ridiculous to me. Philip Rivers is a massive d-bag as a person, but him going out there and playing on a torn ACL, Jack Youngblood playing with a broken leg, those are gamers.
Cutler is not.

EZ: When someone spouts off that they know more football than the other poster is when I quit listening. Both of you are arguing about things that have no impact on this dicusssion.

From someone who knows less than you (evidently),

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

Ok he tore his MCL but they dont know to what extent, Brett Favre played with broken ribs, Mike Vick played with cracked ribs, Rothelisberger played with a boot and a broken nose....So essentially what I am saying if he was in that much pain, why was he still standing up during the second half? If he could stand on the sidelines, he could have gutted out the last 30 min and been an inspiration to his team for gutting this thing out. I have played on a torn meniscus, medial and lateral ligaments gone, I did it for a championship game, it was painful but I did not want to leave the guys behind.  True,  its a personal decision to stay out there and play, I just wish Cutler would have been more belligerent about staying out on the field, it looked too casual.

Report: Cutler tore his V

there is a distinct difference in questioning someone's physical toughness, and questioning their heart. i'm not going to suggest cutler wasn't feeling a lot of pain. i just can't imagine, if i were in that scenario, that they could have dragged me off the field. tape that thing up, give me a brace, and i'll scratch and claw and fight to the end.
but let's forget the physical part. i think the bigger issue is in his actions as a team captain and leader of the team. i saw nothing in that guy that suggested he was backing his team. again, i place myself in the scenario where doctors have told me i cannot return. i'm going to get a headset on, and help coach up the kid that can go out and play. at the least root him on.
this case is different than tomlinson's a couple years ago. lt was a back, and once he couldn't help physically, there's not much left for him to do. that said, he could have been leading the cheers for his teammates.
cutler's body language was awful, and that stuff spreads throughout the team. so, jay, i don't question your toughness. you took a lot of hits this season. i just cannot understand your body language, because you killed the spirit of the team with your actions.
i have no dog in the fight here, as i'm a cowboys' fan. chicago fans, i do have some empathy for you. romo's heart has been in question many times as well, and it's well documented. i still root for my team. it just sucks to see a lack of passion.
