UPDATE 2:45 p.m. EST: Lovie Smith said Cutler has a sprained MCL. A sprain is the same as a minor tear. Smith also said that Cutler is a tough guy.

Sounds like a slew of former NFL players and overactive Twitter users might owe Jay Cutler an apology. According to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun Times, the Bears quarterback suffered an MCL tear in Sunday’s NFC Championship game.

Doctors are still determining the grade of the tear. It’s worth noting that the grade of the MCL tear is significant. A tear can sometimes be another word for “sprain”.

Because Cutler was simply standing on the sideline and not getting treatment on his knee during the second half Sunday, many outside observers (who, of course, could not feel Cutler’s pain) were quick to criticize his toughness and heart.

Though the initial harsh reaction to Cutler’s injury was startling (how often do NFL players get questioned like this?), it wasn’t unprecedented. LaDainian Tomlinson went through a similar ordeal a few years ago when a knee injury kept him out of playoff action. Tomlinson’s knee injury just happened to be an MCL.

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

Hey Candy, I see why you call yourself Candy. I have forgot more about football than you will ever know. I can't count the times on ONE hand that Aikman has ever played on frozen field. And why no comment on Joe Buck? How many frozen fields has he played on. And thanks for sharing with me the fact that the Miami Dolphins play 8 games on the road...........I didn't know that. As as neon Deion is concerned he was nothing more than a 1 arm tackler and he didn't make very many of those did he. If you disagree with anything I put in ink then you have your head so far up you're *ss you are looking at you're tonsils. Now why don't get off here and let fans blog who know what they're talking about

Dan Marino never played in the cold? Now that's funny. Didn't he go to college in Pitt? Pretty sure it's cold there during winter. He also played in a Divison that had NY, NE, Buffalo, & Baltimore at the time, so YES Marino KNOWS what it was like to play in the cold. Please.

As for Cutler, his total lack of any kind of emotion once he was out was totally frustrating to watch as someone who was pulling for the Bears yesterday. I can see being frustrating because he was on the sidelines but to not even attempt to help Hanie was just plain sad. I'll give him the pass with Collins, because it was obvious that there was nothing that could help Collins.
Still, no fan, Bears or otherwise should stick up for that kind of selfish, immature attitude. I was sitting with a table of good friends who are all Bears fans and not one of them was happy with Cutler. They all loved Hanie though. Maybe if Cutler would of put on the headphones & listened to calls, he may of been able to help Hanie some looks on the sidelines?
I think Cutler is a talented quarterback at times who is his own worst enemy, but with that being said, his actions come off as though he is a self-centered, pouty, little bitch. $.02

ezryder--Aikman played for 12 years (217 games) in the same division as Philadelphia, Washington and New York--so he certainly did play in sub zero temperatures.  People judge Cutler harshly because he has well established bona fides in the asshole department.  That said, I would not form an opinion about what happened, let alone criticize Cutler, without knowig how badly he was hurt--but my guess is, not much.

To jwuerl---I am a Bears fan and alot of what you have to say I can't argue with.  Let it be known not all Bears fans are what you call fair weather fan base.  We are very passionate and live and die (mostly die) with our teams.  I love how guys like MJD, a guy who called it a day with 2 games left in the season and his team being 8-6 still having a shot to get in the playoffs, talks sh**.  What a p***y!   I hope the so-called fans of the Bears who talked shit about Jay--Don't ever come back, cuz you're the ones that give us true fans a bad name.  I hope all those that talked sh*t are man enough to own up to your idiotic comments but probably not.
Truth is, our defense couldn't stop the Pack the first half and our special teams got punked the whole game.  The media darling Rodgers never does his thing against us and he sure didn't this game either. The Pack defense really showed up and controlled the game.
Good luck in the Superbowl, you're going to need it against an extremely tough Steeler team.

I so agree ezryder...most of those guys don't even know what the hell there talking about. It's all about spin..even in sports. There's enough of that on the news...Just play the game..I don't need to 2 hours of pregame just to find out what a guys favorite color is..

If you watched the Bears this season he has heart, take big hits, runs up the middle.  He took a beating this season, he was sack 9 times in one games and got back up.  Who on this site could handle that? If he could play he would have played.

So why did Deion Sanders (aka moron) and others question this when they should have known that it could have been lot worse than originally thought.  So now they look like fools.  What, put Jay back out there and risk getting dinged worse?  And he wouldn't have even been 100%!  So how is that a good thing??
It's like these guys forgot what the speed and toughness of the NFL was like.  I can't wait to see what Deion and Co. say now.
