UPDATE 2:45 p.m. EST: Lovie Smith said Cutler has a sprained MCL. A sprain is the same as a minor tear. Smith also said that Cutler is a tough guy.

----------

Sounds like a slew of former NFL players and overactive Twitter users might owe Jay Cutler an apology. According to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun Times, the Bears quarterback suffered an MCL tear in Sunday’s NFC Championship game.

Doctors are still determining the grade of the tear. It’s worth noting that the grade of the MCL tear is significant. A tear can sometimes be another word for “sprain”.

Because Cutler was simply standing on the sideline and not getting treatment on his knee during the second half Sunday, many outside observers (who, of course, could not feel Cutler’s pain) were quick to criticize his toughness and heart.

Though the initial harsh reaction to Cutler’s injury was startling (how often do NFL players get questioned like this?), it wasn’t unprecedented. LaDainian Tomlinson went through a similar ordeal a few years ago when a knee injury kept him out of playoff action. Tomlinson’s knee injury just happened to be an MCL.

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

Cutler was born in 1983.  They stopped teaching toughness way before he first touched a football.

I'm a Bears fam.  I'm more pissed that Collins came in and stunk up the place like his did.  Before Cutler was signed, many fans were calling for Hanie to be starting or given a harder look.

His stock definitely went up after yesterday.  The guy played his heart out and seemed to know what the situation was.

look at the streetrat thinking he's the toughest of the internet tough guys.....moron, go knit me a sweater..there are significant tears and there are partial  tears,(sprains), that require no surgery, not even arthroscopic, everyone should wait for the official diagnosis and then talk...i have seen hockey players play with mcl tears, so for his sake i hope its a tear thats significant, as horrible as it sounds, because anything less makes him a streetrat..yep, a little biotch

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

@justmyop. I live in Chicago. I watched the game and the local news and talked to my buds who were at the game. The reports were that many fans, not all of course, were criticizing Cutler's toughness. As to what was posted last night? I put very little stock in what the casual fan has to say on these boards.

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

When someone speaks of Cutlers injury try and really look and listen to who is doing the talking. What Troy Aikman and Joe Buck are doing in the broadcast booth is beyond me. Troy Aikman has never had to play in sub zero tempatures so he should just keep his big mouth shut, as for Joe Buck I'm 100% positive that he has never been on football field unless he had a microphone in his hand. And neon Deion was jacking his jaw about Cutler, saying that Cutler wasn't injured that bad, and that he had no heart. How in the hell would he know. He's another one that has never had to play in those conditons. As far as the ESPN studio is concerned Chris Burman is a fat ass blow hard who just talks and talks and talks and never say's anything that is worth hearing. Then theres pretty boy Dan Marino who spent his entire career with the Dolphins, sure is cold in Miami isn't it. He doesn't have a clue what 2 below zero would fell like on a football field. And of course I can't leave out the loud mouth Sterling Sharp, what a joke. Then theres my favorite Jimmy Johnson. He sure has spent a lot of time in the cold hasn't he. Oh and I must mention thier 3 piece suits, don't they look pretty. The only ones worth a damn are Cowher, Bradshaw and Ditka. Those three have played and coached in sub zero and windy condithions and thier input would mean somthing. So try and listen to them. Those three have been silent about the fact that Cutler did not finish the game. Must be because they know what they are talking about

First, Cutler's play frustrates me frequently.  It was frustrating that he couldn't move the ball against Green Bay.  They were just ready for the Bear's offense.  But you have to give him the benefit of the doubt as a Pro-Athlete that has sacrificed a ton to get to this game.  Do you think he would choose to stand on the sidelines if his knee didn't have stability?  If you've ever stood on a leg that wobbles side to side, you know what I'm talking about.  Try to maneouver away from the packers rush with a wobble in your leg.  Now after he got hurt, it is true that Cutler could have put on the headset and interjected himself into the offensive coordination.  But, do you know how Mike Martz works?  I bet Jay does.  Perhaps, just perhaps, Cutler was doing what he thought was best, which was to stay out of the way. Plus, if you watched the game, you saw how happy and pumped Cutler was for Hanie when the Bears scored their first touchdown.  He wasn't bummed that he wasn't involved, he was excited. It wasn't an act, it was true emotion showing through.  My personal opinion is that Cutler has a down-trodden look normally.  People just like to use that against him whenever possible.

Given the amount of criticism being thrown his way, I'm sure if it wasn't torn when he went into the Dr.'s office, he made sure it was torn before he came out.

Preach it brother. I just hope that he will get well soon enough so that he can pick up in the spring and summer where he left off and have an even better season next year. With that said I think Hanie made a great case for himself to be Cutler's backup. Now all we need to do is draft/acquire some O-line and keep what we have intact and I think we make a significant run next year all the way this time. Bears Fan For Life.

Damn right they owe him an apology.  If you have seen him play in half his games this year you would never question his toughness.  I bet it was killing him pain wise and competitive wise not beeing out there.  This is what he has been playing for his whole life!
