UPDATE 2:45 p.m. EST: Lovie Smith said Cutler has a sprained MCL. A sprain is the same as a minor tear. Smith also said that Cutler is a tough guy.

----------

Sounds like a slew of former NFL players and overactive Twitter users might owe Jay Cutler an apology. According to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun Times, the Bears quarterback suffered an MCL tear in Sunday’s NFC Championship game.

Doctors are still determining the grade of the tear. It’s worth noting that the grade of the MCL tear is significant. A tear can sometimes be another word for “sprain”.

Because Cutler was simply standing on the sideline and not getting treatment on his knee during the second half Sunday, many outside observers (who, of course, could not feel Cutler’s pain) were quick to criticize his toughness and heart.

Though the initial harsh reaction to Cutler’s injury was startling (how often do NFL players get questioned like this?), it wasn’t unprecedented. LaDainian Tomlinson went through a similar ordeal a few years ago when a knee injury kept him out of playoff action. Tomlinson’s knee injury just happened to be an MCL.

I don't care about ANYTHING else other than the fact that the guy was LEGITIMATELY INJURED and was told NOT to go back into the game.  All the talk about what his face looks like, disinterested, looks like a jerk, blah blah blah blah blah.  NONE of it matters.  Only thing that matters is the guy is a good QB and DID NOT QUIT.  Haters and detractors and all you players watching from your HOUSE and tweeting about it, PIS* OFF.  And you morons in Chicago that have already jumped off the bandwagon, and burned your Cutler jersey, stay away.  Stay off the fan-wagon, because you were never really a fan in the first place.

  1. How about the '85 Patriots? (Infamous Tony Eason as QB against the '85 Bears defense).  Or '83 Miami (the immortal David Woodley, the worst Super Bowl QB in history)?

redwing,

You aren't the first person to complain that bears fans piled on last night.  I don't know how you know it was Bears fans tha piled on.  Did you look at everyone's profiles?  When I read the lame posts last night, I assumed they were just Broncos, Vikings, and Packers fans who just hate Cutler or the Bears.

I'm a Bears fan and I didn't bite.  The guy was sacked more times this year than the previous 3 years combined.  It is frustrasting to see Cutler not have outward emotion like typical football players.

I'm hoping we can trade Hanie for an offensive lineman.  Keep in mind Hanie had only 2 decent series so lets not annoint him as an NFL starter.  He threw 2 picks too.  He played great for a third stringer but he didn't play well overall.  The Bears defense kept the Bears in the game last night, not Hanie.  Bears defense didn't give up a point in the second half.  That's incredible.

As a true blooded paker fan, i thought it was better for us when culter went out... we as packer fans would never dog out one of our players calling them a pussy, weak , or question their heart... nor would we burn a jersey .... Just to prove to all of the world how pathetic Chicago really is, the biggest fair weather fan base in america!!! i Thought it was bs how they treated Cuter.. the man had a good seson and gave his heart and soul to the fans and his teammates... You disgustme you f-ing FIBS...

BTW....... Aaron Rodgers missed one game with a concussion... the same anount that Jay cutler missed with the same injury...\
What this comes downto is that cutler should demand to get traded and let that shit hole state be left with nothing but a bunch of useless teams.... ie.. THe bears and cubs

GO PACK GO>>> GIV STEELERS HELL

Is this really about his injury or his behavior on the sidelines.  Every athlete is different.  If someone chooses to take health percausions then that's their personal choice.  Do I agree with Cutler not playing?  Not entirely but him being injured and physically not being able to play for the remainder of the NFC Championship game is not my biggets issue.  I do beleive is a tough player and would not question that.

My main issue was his behaviour on the sidelines (similar to that of LT a few years ago in the AFC Championship against New England).

As a QB, your a LEADER.  If your down and out, coach up that 3rd string QB.  Jay Cutler as the 1st string gets all the reps during the week.  2nd string gets very little.  The 3rd string?  Put on the head set and see where the Packers D is weak by looking at the snap shot and throw in your feedback to the offense.  The Bears defence which kept them in the game, give them high 5's when they come off the field.  Motivate your team to tough out the remainder of the game.

That's what Cutler should have been doing.  Forget the injury and him not playing.  Be a leader when your team needs you.  I have seen many injured starters on crutches right on the sidelines motivating their teammates and they look eager to play.

Cutler chillin on the bench?  Not good.  To each their own i guess.

You can question Cutler's ability to play consistently.  I'll give you that, but Cutler was the most sacked QB this year.  He has missed one game in 4 years.  He isn't a quitter.  Guys like Maurice Jones Drew need to be a bit more careful with their words.  Maurice DIDN'T play "all year" on his injury.  He was out for the last two games when Jacksonville still had a playoff shot.  He also played horribly against one of the worst run defenses (Indy) and failed.  So he has absolutely no room to talk.  So, go ahead and call Cutler over-rated, inconsistent...whatever.  I can buy that.  I don't buy he is a quitter.

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

Although I am no fan of Cutler's, I must say the criticism of Cutler is unduly harsh and unfair.  It really should go without asking why a pro quaterback would choose to stand on the sidelines rather than play in the NFC championship game. Throughout his tenure with the Bears, Cutler has clearly shown  that he can take a beating. The shameful Chicago fans who piled on Cutler out of frustration are a disgrace. Ostensibly. the only satisfactory explanation these knotheads could accept for Cutler's "simply standing on the sideline and not getting treatment" would have been the removal of his leg with a bone saw by the team trainer in front of the TV cameras. Pathetic. Cutler deserves better.
