UPDATE 2:45 p.m. EST: Lovie Smith said Cutler has a sprained MCL. A sprain is the same as a minor tear. Smith also said that Cutler is a tough guy.

----------

Sounds like a slew of former NFL players and overactive Twitter users might owe Jay Cutler an apology. According to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun Times, the Bears quarterback suffered an MCL tear in Sunday’s NFC Championship game.

Doctors are still determining the grade of the tear. It’s worth noting that the grade of the MCL tear is significant. A tear can sometimes be another word for “sprain”.

Because Cutler was simply standing on the sideline and not getting treatment on his knee during the second half Sunday, many outside observers (who, of course, could not feel Cutler’s pain) were quick to criticize his toughness and heart.

Though the initial harsh reaction to Cutler’s injury was startling (how often do NFL players get questioned like this?), it wasn’t unprecedented. LaDainian Tomlinson went through a similar ordeal a few years ago when a knee injury kept him out of playoff action. Tomlinson’s knee injury just happened to be an MCL.

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

I am no fan of Jay Cutler by any means, but I was very surprised to hear all the criticism directed at him after he came out of the game.  This guy showed toughness all year, especially early in the season when he was taking a beating behind a very poor offensive line.  Every time he got knocked down, he got right back up, and he got knocked down a lot early in the season.  Cutler has a lot of issues, but I do not think  toughness is one of them.

hey i saw him get sacked about 10 times in a game ealier this year, martz was getting ripped as well as the O line. I think he has been sacked as much as any qb the last 2 years i would not question his toughness. he on the otherhand has always had horrible body language and is so cocky i dont think he cared one bit how he looked on the sideline. I think other guys with more media savy would have gone in locker or found some crutches. he is an unliked dude

It's not Cutlers fault, he was born with the look of a total DB!  Give him a break, if he had played the whole game the Bears would have been shutout, so it's OK Bears fans!

At least it saved you from being the third worst Super Bowl Team ever!  ('95 Chargers, '01 Giants)

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

I don't like the guy but he tore his knee up, it tightened up and probably got swollen during the halftime, he tried to go but couldn't. I think Darnell Dockett calling him out is funny considering his injury plagued career. Cutler didn't think he could help the team on a bum knee, if the dumbass Bears coaching staff had gone with Caleb Hainy as the 2nd stringer then they might've won. Bottom line Todd Collins should not even be in the NFL. Once Hainy came in neither Cutler or Collins could come back in, thats the rules folks go read about 3rd string QB's coming in.

Cutler like LT a few years back does not deserve this. It is a direct result of Phillip rivers playing in the AFC Champinship on one knee a few years back. from now on anyteim a QB gets hurt in a blowout people are going to unfairly criticize them. By my count Cutler took a bunch of hits after the injury, he proved he's touhg enough to me and I dare anybody to get in Urlachers face and say otherwise.

Sorry if I got your name wrong Caleb.

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

Cutler doesnt have a great football IQ.  And he is very apt to counter maagement, ie Denver.  However as far as guts and determination it is crazy to question his heart.

He wants what every NFL QB wants, a SB.  He knows the drop off to 2nd and 3rd string.  He wanted to be out there.  MCL doesnt heal with sideline treatment.  A worsening tear can wipe out a season.

Did anyone question ROgers heart when he was held out 2 weeks with concussion and then another one.  Almost didn't make playoffs.  Answer no.  These guys have to use discretion physically.  Guys without injury, Mannings, and younger Favre are fortunate.  Has nothing to do with lack of heart.

Remember Brady missing season?  Let's give the kid his due.  He led league or was close in getting sacked.  These are 300 # brutes creaming him.  How many games did he miss?  How many plays did he miss?

Cutler did as the team doctor ordered and wisely did what's best for his health. None of you bums was in Cutler's shoes and you didn't feel his pain...how many of you would really risk causing permanent damage to your knee knowing you're not going to be able to give 100% just to finish a football game?

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

I Finished a football game with no ACL and torn meniscus...and I wasn't playing to go to the SuperBowl.  I am a huge Bears fan...Cutler is weak and doesn't deserve to play in this city.

Wow, pretty dumb statement.
