UPDATE 2:45 p.m. EST: Lovie Smith said Cutler has a sprained MCL. A sprain is the same as a minor tear. Smith also said that Cutler is a tough guy.

----------

Sounds like a slew of former NFL players and overactive Twitter users might owe Jay Cutler an apology. According to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun Times, the Bears quarterback suffered an MCL tear in Sunday’s NFC Championship game.

Doctors are still determining the grade of the tear. It’s worth noting that the grade of the MCL tear is significant. A tear can sometimes be another word for “sprain”.

Because Cutler was simply standing on the sideline and not getting treatment on his knee during the second half Sunday, many outside observers (who, of course, could not feel Cutler’s pain) were quick to criticize his toughness and heart.

Though the initial harsh reaction to Cutler’s injury was startling (how often do NFL players get questioned like this?), it wasn’t unprecedented. LaDainian Tomlinson went through a similar ordeal a few years ago when a knee injury kept him out of playoff action. Tomlinson’s knee injury just happened to be an MCL.

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

Urlacher said he was a pussy before the season even started. Pretty sure he was in the playoffs, is an expert on pain, and didn't hide behind the internet.

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

Early line on the over-under for the number of players who bashed Cutler offering up an apology: 1.5.

So many players, wishing they could have got as far as Cutler did, having zero knowledge of the situation, and so quick to sit in judgment.

If I'm ever on trial for my life, sure hope I don't have any of them on the jury. Might as well get ready for a date with the needle!

I think MJD was one of those guys.  He didn't play at the end of the regular season with a playoff spot on the line because he had a boo boo.  The wimpiest players generally are the quickest to talk.

I figured it would be something like this.  After all, just because someone is able to stand doesn't mean they don't have a serious injury.  As I recall, Tom Brady walked to the locker room (limping, but walking nonetheless) after suffering a season ending ACL injury.

Perhaps these geniuses will wait a few hours next time before opening their mouths.

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

Well, I dont know alot about MCL injuries, I do think that he should have been taking snaps and dropping back on the sidelines to see if he could go. The way he was just standing around moping, just did not look good. Either way my Packers are going to the Super Bowl baby!!! Its been a great 2011 for me. First the Ducks go to the BCS championship now the Packers!! WooHoo!!

Go Pack Go!!

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

For two years Cutler has gotten his brains bashed in behind an offensive line that couldn't start in college and people have criticized him for everything from his facial expressions to his lack of passion. Enough already. Jay Cutler IS the Bears quarterback and the team and fans are lucky to have him.

Report: Cutler tore his MCL

For a regular season game, unless the playoffs were on the line, no NFL player, probably not even LT is going to sit out a game with the SB on the line.  If he played and they won but he made teh injury worse he'd be getting stabbed in teh back for doing that too.  Although the back did good (not Collins by any means) the Bears don't want him starting the SB.  Even though I am by no means a Cutler fan I never thought yesterday watching the game that he coulda, woulda, shoulda been in there with what ever injury he had.

You mean all the players that didn't make the playoffs and douche bag "experts".
Let's see these people say that stuff to his face like real men instead of posting it on the internet.
