During the 2010 season, there was a lot of speculation about a possible Drew Brees knee injury -- in September a report surfaced that he had a sprained MCL and in November a radio station claimed the Saints were hiding a knee fracture and a torn meniscus in Brees' knee. Turns out, he was indeed injured -- the reigning Super Bowl MVP confirmed to Monday afternoon that he dealt with a sprained MCL for six weeks.

The question about Brees' injury stemmed indirectly from Jay Cutler's injury on Sunday night (for which he caught some grief) and directly from teammate Heath Evans' claim Monday morning that Brees played on a sprained MCL for six weeks.

"Yeah, I had an MCL sprain this year and was able to rehab it and play with a brace and it limited my mobility for a period of time," Brees told "But I was fortunate enough to be able to get through it.

"Nobody knows the extent of Jay Cutler's injury except for him and the Bears training staff, so nobody can comment on it fairly. I think it's unfair to do so just because you don't know -- you can speculate all you want."

Brees, in Hawaii at the Pro Bowl working with P&G and NFL Play 60, took a stance that contrasts directly with his willingness to play through the injury, but his point is a salient one -- it's impossible to know whether Cutler could have been effective or not with the injury. His lone series in the third quarter, while not all that different from his first half, indicated to the Bears training staff -- based on what Cutler said about the injury -- that he'd be unable to perform up to snuff.

Listen to the full podcast with Drew Brees -- he talks about Cutler, the Super Bowl, the Saints' expectations for 2011, the possibility of a lockout, Twitter, Play 60 and much, much more -- below.

Ditto, Anto. Cutler has an attitude problem. He can have his attitude, but for it to be ok, he'll have to produce more than he has.

Cutler needs an attitude change. He does not make his teammates any better. His ego won't let him celebrate and become emotional. He acts like he's elite and entitled.
He needs to put a lot more up on the scorboard for a few years to be able to enter elite status. Hopefully even then he won't feel entitled - but become grateful instead.

Deion Sanders is a piece of garbage.  Someone should have slammed his showboating ass to the turf. I despise that guy. Just as much as Barry Bonds, Brett Fart and Dogkiller Vick.

I dont think it's a question of whether he was hurt or not but more of the manor in which he dealt with it and the team after he was pulled. It's one thing to be hurt but support your team. it's another if you sit on the bench and do nothing. Thats the perception everyone saw during the game. Personally I dont like cutler and i have my biased opinions of him and he just confirmed it by sitting on the bench and not being engaged in the game with his teammates.

He could have easily put a brace on or grab some cruches and be on the sidelines giving inspiration to his teammates but we saw nothing like that. Instead we saw him hudled up next to a heater chillin. If hes supposed to be the leader of the team, he did a hell of a job at it.

its the fact that he got a minor injury and didn't know how to deal with it. It takes heart and extra courage to fight through the pain

Who says it was a minor injury Rook? Were you in the trainers room after the game or did you read the MRI? does this help here of why he did not return?

Bears coach Lovie Smith said Cutler sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee late in the first half and would have been questionable for the Feb. 6 Super Bowl had the Bears beaten Green Bay. He also emphasized the team and medical staff made the call to lift the quarterback

I find it funny people mention his fellow players.  You mean like MJD?  That bum didn't play with a playoff spot on the line.  He kept talking about championship games too, someone fill me in, has MJD ever even made the playoffs?  What would he know about it?

Cutler this or Cutler that, Drew Brees = Beast. Even with a sprained MCL most of the season he goes to the Pro Bowl and throws for a crazy amount of yards. Imagine if he'd have been 100%. Heck, imagine if the Saints didn't have 5 RBs go down and he'd have been 100%.

For whoever was questioning whether or not Brees took a break with his knee injury, no he did not.  I forget which game it was earlier in the year that he got hurt, but it was a noticeable limp that he had going to the huddle and playing.  I couldn't tell you the level of the tear that he had, yet there definitely was a noticeable difference in his mobility and accuracy when he was hurt.  With Cutler, the best chance to win was on the mobile Caleb Hanie. Some of the plays that he made were due to his ability to avoid the pressure and step into throws.  Cutler would never have been able to make some of the plays Hanie did on a bum knee.  Caleb Hanie did a pretty good job filling in leading the bears to 2 touchdowns and got fairly close on a third.  Scoring 14 points in the NFC championship game as a 3rd string QB isn't too shabby in my book.  With a hurt Cutler in the game, it would have been a blowout favoring the Packers.
