Car salesman fired for wearing wrong tie

Direct from the department of “why are you letting sports ruin your life?” comes the Chicago Sun Times tale of a Chicago-area car salesman who lost his job because he refused to take off the Packers tie he wore to work.

Salesman John Stone wore his green and gold Packers tie to his suburban Oak Lawns dealership Monday. Obviously, the wounds of Sunday’s games were not yet healed.

Webb’s GM Jerry Roberts told Stone that he had two options: take off the tie or get the hell out of his store (he might not have framed it exactly like that). For some reason, Stone decided not to undo the tie. So, Roberts fired him.

Responded Stone, who sold 14 cars last month, to the paper: “I was just showing my love for my team and it was a nice, smart tie that matched my clothes – none of the customers minded: they had a sense of humor about it.”

Responded Roberts: “(The tie) makes it harder to sell cars in what’s already a competitive sales environment.

“We spend $20,000 a month on advertising with the Bears on WBBM during the season, and we have Bears players including Corey Wootten driving loaner vehicles, and here was a salesman openly undoing that work.”

I think the entire story is ridiculous. Roberts’ reaction to the tie and Stone’s refusal to take it off (you’ve got two kids, man). But then again, I didn’t grow up in Chicago and I’m not a Bears fan, so maybe, I just don’t understand.

So, I took it to you, our Twitter followers, asking how you would react if you were a Chicagoan buying a car IN Chicago and your salesman was wearing a Packers tie the day after a heartbreaking loss.

Some responses:

@DenverDiablo
“i would grow up and not base one of the largest financial decisions of my life on a sports tie.”

@bcbbc2202
I'd leave and NEVER come back there

@Tkleckner
I would probably not want to work with him. Unless he instantly reduced the price. than who cares

@SarahSpain most days - joke around wuth him/her but get over it. day after the big loss? go elsewhere!!

@Scott_A_Miller Buy a car.

And my favorite.

@JayRichieRich tell him I was a Packers fan and get the car at invoice price

The story has a happy ending, though. According to the Dan Patrick Show, Stone has a new job already.

really shows how classless chicago fans are its a tie and if no one complained about it the leave it alone. i hope this dealership loses it advertising money from the bears not wanting anything to do with these people.

The guy sold 14 cars last month alone! You don't fire someone like that! This manager should be letting this salesman wear whatever the ***bleep*** he wants to fargin wear!

If I was a regional manager for that car dealership (if there was one), I would A) hire the guy back, with a bonus from coming back, nice fat one, and fire the idiot that fired the salesman!

People now do you understand why Brett Favre tries to remain in the news - it's to protect everybody from stories like these.

A tempest in a teacup, nothing more.

Car salesman fired for wearing wrong tie

Guys, tell me I am seeing things.  There was not an earlier post comparing wearing a Packers tie to wearing a Nazi armband right?  I just made that up, right?  No one can be that out of touch, can they?

Really Spanky? Freedom of speech in the workplace? If you so believe in that, how about you go up to your boss tomorrow and tell him he is a moron and see what happens. Or how about you come into work wearing only a toga? If the guy was wearing a Vikings tie, I am sure you would say the salesman was a tool.

Car salesman fired for wearing wrong tie

The guy is in Chicago trying to sell cars. I know if someone here in Pittsburgh was wearing a Cleveland or Baltimore tie he would not have a chance in hell at selling a car that day. If he had a Bungles tie on people would just LOL at him. But what the salesman did hear is basically equal to a Pepsi worker wearing a Coca Cola hat or something. He should have been fired for not taking it off.
