Jeff Ireland's apparently a Chad Henne fan

There aren't a tremendous number of people associated with the Miami Dolphins that seem to love Chad Henne.

Except, perhaps, the one who really matters the most -- Jeff Ireland.

"He’s shown some aggressive tendencies, and shown some exciting throws," Ireland said per the Sun-Sentinal. "Chad has all the ability in the world. We just have to put a plan together and an offense philosophy that fits Chad Henne and I think we’ll be able to do that."

Okay, Ireland's probably the second most important guy to make happy in the 'Fins organization; Stephen Ross is probably the guy you really want to please down there.

But still, this is not-so-faint praise from a guy who's really high up in the Dolphins organization. And it means, if you take it at face value, that Miami's committed to go into 2011 with Henne as their starting quarterback.

Two problems with that. One, that was their plan in 2010 and you saw how that worked out. And two, Henne (in his current iteration) doesn't exactly fit the "sexy offense" mold that Ross is looking for. He mentioned earlier this year that he wants something a little more fast-paced and high-scoring than Dan Henning's outfit provided.

Which means there's still a chance for Cam Newton to end up landing in Miami's lap later in the first round. On the bright side, though, perhaps drafting a quarterback would be just enough to scare Henne into not telegraphing every third pass.

Granted Henne's play this year was abysmal and it's hard to be a Henne supporter for sure.  But for next year, let's say the fins keep the rest of the team the same and sell out for a QB, and let's assume they get the same poor play from the OL, almost no running game, poor success on first down, and a special teams unit that ranks in the bottom of the league.  Now let me ask you this, what other QB you want that will succeed in that system?  You can pick anyone that's currently playing or draft one, I don't care.  Who are you giving me that takes this same team and makes them better by 3-4 games in order to make the playoffs?   Hell even Marino didn't win a superbowl because of two different problems throughout his career, either no running game, or no defense to keep him from having to score 38 to win a game.

Cam Newton, please! ok he'll run around and extend some plays but will he improve the team by 3-4 wins?  I say they SLIDE by two wins with him.  Palmer is gonna be trade bait, you want him?  CMON MAN.  You find me a system where Henne (or any NFL QB) is playing in predominantly 3rd and 3 situations instead of 3rd and 9 and that will be a system that's consistently in the playoffs.

Henne's trash.  This is just pillow talk that's designed to keep his spirits high, just in case the Dolphins have to turn to him again.

The guy's the all-time passing leader at MICHIGAN.  MICHIGAN!  That's a real accomplishment.  And he's second all-time for the Big Ten.  How long has that conference been around?  Bottom line is the guy can make all the throws.  He's only been in the league a few years and had to compete with Pennington, who's shown flashes of Pro Bowl talent himself throughout his career when he's healthy.  Give Chad a break!  You Miami fans wanting to run him out of town are just as bad as the Cardinals fans that ousted Lienart because Hall of Fame-bound Warner beat him out.  QB is the hardest position to develop, and last I checked, even Aaron Rodgers took time.  Peyton Manning took time.  I get so sick of this "now, now, now" mantra pro sports has.  Henne has the pedigree and the arm.  Not everyone is LeBron James and can dominate their sport from the moment they get drafted.  Go ahead.  Draft Newton and see if he's the answer, but if I were coach, I'd start with offensive schemes and the play-calling.  You can't expect Henne to make gold out of manure.

I really hated seeing Chad Henne on the field every time Michigan played the Spartans.  It seems like he was at UofM for like 8 years...Now he plays in the NFL.  Tom Brady he is not...He does show glimpses of being mediocre at times.  He then follows it up with a dose of reality...
