John Madden sounds off on Cutler critics

John Madden is as passionate about football as anyone alive. Still, it’s not often that he gets riled up. J. Madden (US Presswire)

Appearing Thursday on Sirius radio, the legendary commentator sounded off on the Jay Cutler criticism. Here’s what Madden said (via Pro Football Talk):

“I’ve been in football for over 50 years. I’ve never questioned a player’s toughness. I never have.  Whether it was in coaching, broadcasting, whatever.

“There’s no one in the NFL that has a tougher job to do than Jay Cutler. I think playing quarterback in the NFL is the toughest thing you can do. I think throwing a forward pass and having guys rushing you and hitting you when you’re looking downfield and throwing the ball is the toughest act you have to do.”

After talking about how Cutler plays with Type 1 diabetes, Madden picked up the intensity.

“And then people are looking at him, they put a camera on him, and they say they don’t like his demeanor,” he said. “Demeanor hell!
“Live a day in his shoes. Type I diabetes is not a daytime thing.  It’s not a week thing.  It’s not a month thing.  It’s a life thing.  And it’s every day, and it’s every day for 24 hours.”

Madden’s grandson suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

Tebow a winner?  When?  As a Raiders fan I am  very happy Cutler is gone and Tebow is your QB.  He is nowhere near as good of a QB as Cutler is.
As far as Cutler goes, he is a baby.  The reason players have fired on him is because he is a jerk.  He is disliked by alot of players because he is an arse.   As far as toughness goes, I cant say.  Not because I dont know what it's like, but because everyone is different.  I don't know how his knee felt.  I have torn my ACLS twice on EACH KNEE. Once during highschool football.  Now it doesn't hurt that much and most people could keep playing if it weren't for the instability it causes.  A sprain could hurt more.  Enough about how tough football is.  We all have played it.  We would all play it right now if our bodies would allow.  Roofing a house is way tougher than football.  It annoys me that Madden places these players on this tough shelf.  You don't have to be tough.  Just a freak athlete.  Some of which are the biggest babies ever.  Any fan has the right to say what ever they want about Cutler.  I'm tired of these players thinking they are so much better than us.  Ya you Urlacher.  I have met him in person and he was a jerk.  Thinks he is better than everyone else.  Why do these guys who play a kids game think they are tough.  Lets throw some shingles on their backs, or give a chain saw to take down some lumber.  Or have them sit on a line day in and day out doing some repetitive small motion for minimum wage.  Thats tough.  Tough has nothing to do with football.  Some people are tough and others are not.  Most of these people judging Cutler are tough.  They do way tougher jobs every day for little reward.  They can't believe someone who has been as lucky as Cutler wouldn't have to be carted off the field to come out.  Agree with them or not, I think they know tough better than Urlacher.  Yeah the guy who got chased down by a QB in the open field and lost the game for the Bears.  What would he know about tough.

TDAISON.. you obviously do not watch football and don't understand what I mean. Of course they played but do you even know how they did?

Tom Brady 16-27 145 yds 1 tdBen Rothlisberger 9-21 123 yds 2 interceptions

So no I am not an idiot, you are... These qb's did not lead their team to the Super Bowl they won despite them. That is what I mean by don't know shit about football. You can win with a great defense even if your qb is suspect like The Ravens did with Dilfer.

What I am saying is Cutler had a great season and led his team to the NFC title game without and o-line or good receivers. I am still waiting for you to show me a weaker line or receivers in the playoffs this year.

Thought so dumbass!!!!!

Chris Harris, Olin Krutz, Greg Olsen, Celeb Hiene, Earl Bennet and Lance Briggs all showed thier support.  And Im sure any body else they would have asked.  Not a single Bear who was able to speak to the media about the subject has done anything other than stand up for him.  Stick to hockey buckeyezane.  Your a little clueless in the football department.

Regardless of whether Cutler whimped out, was injured, or showed the "correct" demeanor, the bottom line is, will he be able to conitinue as QB for the Bears?  The tone here in Chicago seems to suggest otherwise. I expect he'll be dealing with a heap of criticism, unfairly in my opinion, from both fans and press next season.
