John Madden is as passionate about football as anyone alive. Still, it’s not often that he gets riled up. J. Madden (US Presswire)

Appearing Thursday on Sirius radio, the legendary commentator sounded off on the Jay Cutler criticism. Here’s what Madden said (via Pro Football Talk):

“I’ve been in football for over 50 years. I’ve never questioned a player’s toughness. I never have.  Whether it was in coaching, broadcasting, whatever.

“There’s no one in the NFL that has a tougher job to do than Jay Cutler. I think playing quarterback in the NFL is the toughest thing you can do. I think throwing a forward pass and having guys rushing you and hitting you when you’re looking downfield and throwing the ball is the toughest act you have to do.”

After talking about how Cutler plays with Type 1 diabetes, Madden picked up the intensity.

“And then people are looking at him, they put a camera on him, and they say they don’t like his demeanor,” he said. “Demeanor hell!
“Live a day in his shoes. Type I diabetes is not a daytime thing.  It’s not a week thing.  It’s not a month thing.  It’s a life thing.  And it’s every day, and it’s every day for 24 hours.”

Madden’s grandson suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

He's NEVER won anywhere, not in college

Could you take Vandy to a bowl game?

John Madden is not an authority on toughness, I only want star QB's to respond to this type of scenario.  Ask Montana, Elway, Favre, dont let an old coach removed from the game to talk about toughness.

I'd give Madden a little more credibility if he hadn't praised Brett Favre 7,926,211 times about his toughness and playing through injuries.  Does he think Favre would've allowed himself to be taken out of the game ?  Does he think Favre would've been on the sidelines not talking to coaches or other players ?  The reason so many other players are taking Jay Cutler to task is that so many of them would've given their left testicle to be in the NFC Championship game, let alone a little pain in the knee.

Of course, I do believe Madden's sympathy for Cutler's Type 1 diabetes.  As we all know, Madden has Type 3 diabetes, the same kind curmudgeony old farts weighing 400 lbs (like John Madden and Wilford Brimley have).

Did anyone question his toughness when he got sacked 9 times in the first half against the NYG and kept going out there?  Did anyone question his toughness when he didnt miss a game in his career until this year due to a concussion (and trust me, he would have played if they let him).  Jay Cutler is tough, maybe not the most mentally tough guy, but he can take a a beating and keep getting up.   He would have been out there
Yeah,  and the one game he sat out is a mandatory NFL policy. If that policy wasn't in place, chances are he is playing the next week,

Anyone who is saying that Cutler left the game because he had a poor half is a moron!   Why exactly would Jay Cutler want to leave the most important game of his life only down 14 points?  Did anyone watch the Bears-NYJ game?  He was awful in the first half, and came out firing and had a tremendous second half.

But there is evidence, he had an MRI and it came back as a grade 2 MCL sprain/tear. He was riding the bike to see if he could loosen his knee up to try and get back in the game. How does your example apply to what happened to cutler? If anything, the doctor thats in the workman's comp plan will see that he tore his MCL right? Wouldn't that be all the evidence the adjuster would need?

John Madden is an old man that should be happy he still has his video game. I don't care about Cutlers toughness or demeanor, he's a loser. He's NEVER won anywhere; not in college, Denver or the Bears before this year. He'll NEVER take the Bears to the promised land...nothing else matters.

MADDEN IS RIGHT,  THE GUY HAS A TEAR OF HIS MCL.  DOCTORS HAVE COME TO HIS DEFENSE AND SAID IT WOULD REQUIRE 4 WEEKS TO HEAL AND THAT NO PLAYER WOULD BE PLAYING ON THIS INJURY.  PERCEPTION BY THE MEDIA MADE THIS WORSE.  HE CAME OUT ONTO THE FIELD AND THE CAMERAS SHOWED US WHAT THEY WANTED US TO SEE.  CUTLER COULD OF HID IN THE LOCKER ROOM WITH HIS INJURY,  REMEMBER HE LEFT THE GAME FOR THE LOCKER ROOM BEFORE HALF TIME.  HE WAS INJURED.  HE TRIED TO PLAY AND COULD NOT.  END OF STORY.  MEDIA BLEW THIS UP.

Oh my God, I cant believe Im agreeing with Madden!  I've never seen a witch hunt like this in my life, I guess it just goes to show you how much Jay Cutler truly is hated by the rest of the league.

And what evidence is there that Jay Cutler isnt hurt?  Has the MRI been released to the public?   Because that is all that matters.  And just cause you can walk on a sprained MCL does not mean that you are not hurt.  In fact, doctors tell patients to walk on it to strengthen the muscles around the injury, so Jay was probably following doctors orders.  But just because you can walk, that doesnt mean you can take a 7 step drop, evade rushers, and throw an accurate pass.  That is impossible with a sprained MCL.
