John Madden sounds off on Cutler critics

John Madden is as passionate about football as anyone alive. Still, it’s not often that he gets riled up. J. Madden (US Presswire)

Appearing Thursday on Sirius radio, the legendary commentator sounded off on the Jay Cutler criticism. Here’s what Madden said (via Pro Football Talk):

“I’ve been in football for over 50 years. I’ve never questioned a player’s toughness. I never have.  Whether it was in coaching, broadcasting, whatever.

“There’s no one in the NFL that has a tougher job to do than Jay Cutler. I think playing quarterback in the NFL is the toughest thing you can do. I think throwing a forward pass and having guys rushing you and hitting you when you’re looking downfield and throwing the ball is the toughest act you have to do.”

After talking about how Cutler plays with Type 1 diabetes, Madden picked up the intensity.

“And then people are looking at him, they put a camera on him, and they say they don’t like his demeanor,” he said. “Demeanor hell!
“Live a day in his shoes. Type I diabetes is not a daytime thing.  It’s not a week thing.  It’s not a month thing.  It’s a life thing.  And it’s every day, and it’s every day for 24 hours.”

Madden’s grandson suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

John Madden sounds off on Cutler critics

So when is Lovie Smith gonna go Mike Gundy and say "I'm a man. I'm 40".  Thats all we are missing here.

So everyone with the Bears is coming to Jay Cutlers defense and saying he was injured and hes tough.  I don't buy it.  Cutler wanted out of that game because he stunk on ice.  As I watched the game, I called his pick before it happened.  I told eveyone that Cutler was gonna be Cutler and hang one out there for a pick.  Presto.....INT. It upset the Bears fans, but it is what is.

What else are they gonna say?  Look at what the Panthers did when Jake Delhomme threw the 4 picks in a playoff game.  They all came out and said they support him, but what happpened when he went back to throwing picks?  He got shipped out.  Its the company line.

John Madden sounds off on Cutler critics

I love how everyone jumping on the "protect Cutler" bandwagon is ignoring the obvious.  ALL the evidence suggests Cutler isn't that seriously injured.  All these talking heads running to Cutler's side and blasting his critics need to take a step back and really look at what everyone else is seeing.  The evidence being shown is very bad for Cutler.  It really doesn't look like there's much of an injury.
Here's another way to look at it.  Say Jay isn't an NFL QB.  Lets say he works on the line for a manufacturing company.  He gets "injured" on the job.  What happens?  The company sends him to one of their approved doctors, and workman's comp kicks in.  Now, lets look at what that workman's comp person sees.  He sees an injured worker riding a bike, jumping up and down, and walking around.  Afterwards, a couple days later he sees Jay walking around town with nothing visible supporting his injured knee, and not even a perceptible limp.  Now mind you, this is an injury that has taken him off the job, and an injury the company's insurance is expected to pay for.  What's going to happen?  At the very least, the adjuster is going to look at the visual evidence and deny his claim.  At the worst, he would be charged with fraud, and probably fired.
So before all these talking heads jump to conclusions about people criticizing Cutler, they need to take a long look at what these people are seeing.  Address the evidence, and refute it.  Show evidence that he truly is hurt, and they will probably back off.  With all due respect to Mr. Madden, he also needs to address what the public is actually seeing.

It's good to see players and coaches sound off in defense of Jay Cutler. Nobody knows how bad he is hurt or what goes on for the time the cameras are off of him. It's easy to get on his case but we've got to walk in his shoes before we know the whole story.

I totally agree with John Madden-a football icon.  If the football player can't go why hurt the team AS WELL AS HIMSELF.  i WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH CulTLER'S COACH.

Im not sure why everyone is giving Jay Cutler a hard time. He has a grade 3 sprain of the MCL, which is a tear. With the way the Packers were rushing Cutler there is no way he could have had the time to manover and set to throw with that injury. Philip Rivers did play on a very very slightly torn ACL, but he did not finish the game.... Billy Volak did. As for MJD, the guy is just a loser who had a grade one sprain of his mcl and played through that, its not even the same injury.

He seemed to be standing and walking around just fine on the sidelines.
So that means he can drop back, run, plant, follow thru on a throw??  How the hell would you know that just by looking at him ON TV?!?!

Come on now -- do us all a favor and never post anything ever again.

So you are saying that Jay Cutlers percieved demeanor is the real problem? Unless you have some special mind reading powers or inside information as to what he was actually thinking, I submit that your comment is complete crap.

Im I missing something or is Cutler the first player ever to come out of a playoff game b/c of an injury?
