John Madden is as passionate about football as anyone alive. Still, it’s not often that he gets riled up. J. Madden (US Presswire)

Appearing Thursday on Sirius radio, the legendary commentator sounded off on the Jay Cutler criticism. Here’s what Madden said (via Pro Football Talk):

“I’ve been in football for over 50 years. I’ve never questioned a player’s toughness. I never have.  Whether it was in coaching, broadcasting, whatever.

“There’s no one in the NFL that has a tougher job to do than Jay Cutler. I think playing quarterback in the NFL is the toughest thing you can do. I think throwing a forward pass and having guys rushing you and hitting you when you’re looking downfield and throwing the ball is the toughest act you have to do.”

After talking about how Cutler plays with Type 1 diabetes, Madden picked up the intensity.

“And then people are looking at him, they put a camera on him, and they say they don’t like his demeanor,” he said. “Demeanor hell!
“Live a day in his shoes. Type I diabetes is not a daytime thing.  It’s not a week thing.  It’s not a month thing.  It’s a life thing.  And it’s every day, and it’s every day for 24 hours.”

Madden’s grandson suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

John Madden sounds off on Cutler critics

I'd have to have a broken leg or something similar before I'd leave a game like that.
Ha...You've never played/never will play in a game like that, ever...So please, let's not use the woulda, coulda, shouldas...

IMO questioning his toughness is fair.

Nice..

I respect Mr. Madden a lot, but I must disagree. I saw him quit very soon after halftime of a hugely important game for his team. He seemed to be standing and walking around just fine on the sidelines. I'd have to have a broken leg or something similar before I'd leave a game like that. Especially considering his salary, he should've manned up but chose to punk out. Personally, I've always thought he was overrated anyways. IMO questioning his toughness is fair. I feel bad for Bears fan, cutler needs to go period.

Thank you. Get off Cutler. Nobody ever talks about him having to deal with Diabetes on a daily basis and how tough that is. Moodiness and irritability are side effects of the disease. Besides he has to deal with brainless Chicago reporters and city who still lives in past like it is 1985-86. Get him an O-line, a stud receiver, and an OC and watch him shine.
I am a die hard Colts fan and I nver hear about Manning's actions. pouting and whining and pointing fingers at his players.
Who cares about Cutler's demeanor on the sidelines. He was mad and dejected for being injured and not able to play.

What I think most people are missing, including Madden, is this isnt about Cutler's physical toughness but rather about his heart and mental toughness.  Regardless of how hurt he may have been if you go back and look at his body language and his overall demeanor he looked as if he would have rather been anywhere else besides that football game.

Hey Trezedaily,       What has Jay Cutler exactly whined about? Has he publicly come out and complained about his receivers? His coaches? His offensive line that puts him out to get sacked the most times in the NFL at 52? The only time he has caused an uproar in the press was when Josh McDaniels tried making an example of him back in Denver because Cutler made it known he preferred Shanahan to McDaniels and said he wanted to trade and/or bench Cutler. So yea, please explain that one to me.

Yeah, living in Chicago I have to say that I never hear him blaming teamates, and he plays behind one of the worst O-lines in the league and with a below average receiving core.  He does make mistakes, and he isn't all warm and friendly in the press conferences.  But frankly who cares.  The people who need an explanation on the injury is the coaches and the rest of the team.  And Kruetz and Urlacher have both been very vocal to call this whole thing ridiculous, going beyond the normal company line in defending him.  Also, I have not heard Cutler complain about the media treatment at all either.  So say what you will about his demeanor, and the fact that he is not personable, but don't question his toughness.  And know that there is a big difference between not having the respect of your team and not have the respsect of the media, and he seems to very much have the respect of his team.  The whole thing is a non-story and ridiculous.  He did not play well, the Packers were the better team last Sunday and they won.  Cutler got injured halfway through and was not physically able to finish.  The rest is just BS.

I'm not going to go as far as calling him names, as everyone has done. I think Dan Patrick said it best. He did not look like he cared at all. And that's the MO on Cutler. Why did he sit there? why didn't he get involved with the other QB's and try to help them? That's what really miffs me. This is poison for any NFL team. I don't doubt any injury, as I tore miniscus and couldn't even walk. But for the love of Pete, Go to the locker room or something, stay out of the spotlight for a few days.

You're a complete idiot. Every great quarterback has acted like Cutler. Philip Rivers, Tom Brady, and Dan Marino back in the day every game. Like I said, you're an idiot. Image doesn't matter when you're trying to win games and Cutler will win a ton more games. you keep on crying about irrelevent stuff.
