John Madden is as passionate about football as anyone alive. Still, it’s not often that he gets riled up. J. Madden (US Presswire)

Appearing Thursday on Sirius radio, the legendary commentator sounded off on the Jay Cutler criticism. Here’s what Madden said (via Pro Football Talk):

“I’ve been in football for over 50 years. I’ve never questioned a player’s toughness. I never have.  Whether it was in coaching, broadcasting, whatever.

“There’s no one in the NFL that has a tougher job to do than Jay Cutler. I think playing quarterback in the NFL is the toughest thing you can do. I think throwing a forward pass and having guys rushing you and hitting you when you’re looking downfield and throwing the ball is the toughest act you have to do.”

After talking about how Cutler plays with Type 1 diabetes, Madden picked up the intensity.

“And then people are looking at him, they put a camera on him, and they say they don’t like his demeanor,” he said. “Demeanor hell!
“Live a day in his shoes. Type I diabetes is not a daytime thing.  It’s not a week thing.  It’s not a month thing.  It’s a life thing.  And it’s every day, and it’s every day for 24 hours.”

Madden’s grandson suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

an apology?  He gets paid $7 million.  Hold a press conference and explain why you didnt even chat with the press about it.  Cutler is bad PR and injured or not, nobody owes him an apology.  He got his $7 Million.  Get real.

John Madden sounds off on Cutler critics

First off I'm a huge believer in John Madden, but there's one thing about this that I think is being overlooked.  Maybe we can't question Cutlers' physical toughness, but I think his mental toughness is certainly in question.  He's been a crybaby since day one.  He acts like a diva, yet he hasn't won anything.  This was his first playoff since high school.  If Jay wasn't such a crybaby to begin with, if he would just stop whining and play football, his toughness may have never came into question.  That said, he hasn't been crying as much in Chicago so hopefully his baby image will fade.

I really do think a formal apology is needed. At least by the guys that said stuff on air, on talk shows and the like. The twitter guys I could care less about, its twitter. But it's the broadcasters, radio and show hosts who's job it is to make opinions based on facts. All any of them have done is hide behind the "demeanor" aspect of the criticism. "i was only questioning his demeanor, not the injury" - that's the easy way out and its incorrect. Every part of this was related and if you questioned one, you questioned the other to an extent. I don't like Cutler, Im a GB fan. But the way these guys are trying to save face instead of standing up and admitting they were wrong is ridiculous. I understand his demeanor was bad, but it ALWAYS has been. No one questions Manning when he's got his head low and walking to the sideline after a pick while obvioulsy yelling at himself.
He needs to work on demeanor, but demeanor and heart or toughness are very different things...

If Cutler ends up anything like the "Sexual Predator" minus the sexual assualt part then I'm all for it. No matter how much you hate Roethlisburger he is on his 3rd superbowl appearance and if he wins will have as many rings as Tom Brady. I hate him to don't get me wrong but comparing Cutler to him is irrelevant and stupid. Also about the picks Cutler has never once blamed his WR or anyone. He should since there have been many times that it hasn't been his fault also another factor he plays behind the worst O-Line in the league by a longshot. He got sacked 52 times in 15 games next closest is Joe Flacco at 40 in 16 games. So next time you want to talk about a QB try looking at the line that protects him and his WR cause the Bears are Mediocre at both right now.

Personally I'll take Madden's assessment over all Cutler's critics combined...Neon Deon, Schlereth, et. al. Deon Sanders, for me, is in the same bag as Michael Irvin and Warren Sapp: An ego-driven individual who if he speaks long enough will eventually mis-speak, Sapp and Irvin for lack of erudition, Sanders for his malaprops (misusing big words over his head). No credibility.

How can they question Cutler's toughness? Sanders ignored the medical reports that Cutler had a grade two tear of his MCL, "tear" being synonomous with "sprain" in the doctors' words. Sanders kept saying, "It's just a sprain." But this is the same guy who thought he should have been the third best player of all time, on the NFL network's top 100. At least Sapp backed Cutler.

If a qb can't plant and throw, he's a detriment to the team's chances of winning. None of these guys were inside Cutler's leg, they don't know what he was feeling. And if you don't know, shut the bleep up!

Right in Madden!

What's up with American's and thier critism of everything latley.  This wont be the last guy people drag throught the mud for no reason.  Seems we have more critics now adays than actual fans.  I guess its the new thing in the media to find drama and faults to keep all the haters happy and watching their channel.

"superstar" rating.  Not if they saw this one.  You are an idiot and if your actually from Chicago and "massive" idiot.  Ya see Cutler has NEVER thrown his recievers under the bus and openly come out and say that they were at fault.  NEVER!!!!  He has commented on the fact that timing has been an issue, which it has.  I have wayched this guy play for four years, two here in Chicago and he is not perfect.  Bad foot work many times, putting passes into crazy tight spots, but he has never said he was not part of the problem.  I don't know you but based on your comment, you are an idiot.  Get a few facts before posting, and change the stupid picture.
