John Madden is as passionate about football as anyone alive. Still, it’s not often that he gets riled up. J. Madden (US Presswire)

Appearing Thursday on Sirius radio, the legendary commentator sounded off on the Jay Cutler criticism. Here’s what Madden said (via Pro Football Talk):

“I’ve been in football for over 50 years. I’ve never questioned a player’s toughness. I never have.  Whether it was in coaching, broadcasting, whatever.

“There’s no one in the NFL that has a tougher job to do than Jay Cutler. I think playing quarterback in the NFL is the toughest thing you can do. I think throwing a forward pass and having guys rushing you and hitting you when you’re looking downfield and throwing the ball is the toughest act you have to do.”

After talking about how Cutler plays with Type 1 diabetes, Madden picked up the intensity.

“And then people are looking at him, they put a camera on him, and they say they don’t like his demeanor,” he said. “Demeanor hell!
“Live a day in his shoes. Type I diabetes is not a daytime thing.  It’s not a week thing.  It’s not a month thing.  It’s a life thing.  And it’s every day, and it’s every day for 24 hours.”

Madden’s grandson suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

Who cares if Jay had a boo boo or not? He sucked when he was in the game, so what's the big deal if he came out. I'm glad he's on the Bears, it just makes it that much easier to beat their team, I hope he stays there. LOL

John Madden sounds off on Cutler critics

I wonder how many of you who think Cutler is less than a man have ever had any type of serious injury as he does? And next time you "only" sprain or twist your ankle, go out and play 15 minutes of three on three basketball with your friends full bore. THEN come back to tell us how tough you are. As a disabled Army Veteran, Rest assured that most of you negative commenters have probably never had more than a cut or scratch. So until you walk in someone's shoes in the same shape, don't judge them.

Its amazing how stupid people are.  Get the Facts seperated from the rumors and then make an honest judgement.

RUMOR is Jay wimped out didnt do everything possible to try and play through pain.  FACT Jay stayed in the game after he injured his knee and over time was forced out by the coaching and medical staff.  The fact that he didnt go down and get checked by trainers when the injury actually happend shows his toughness.  So many other players go down like they broke there leg when all they did is bruise a thigh or get the breath knocked out of them.  I dont hear anybody questioning Hines Wards toughness when he left the AFCCG a couple of years ago.

RUMOR  Rivers and Breese and a bunch of other guys claim to have played with a similar injury.  FACT Rivers left the game in which he sustained the injury and returned after treatment.  He was tough but Jay never got the chance to play in the Super bowl on the injured knee.  Chargers lost by the way and many wonder if a Healthy Volek would have been better than a broken Rivers.  Payton and Brees have both come out to share Breese had a slight sprain.  For every guy that plays with this injury there are 100s who cannot.

RUMOR  Jay sulked on the sideline instead of helping out a young Hiene.  Fact there is video evidence of Cuter going over pictures with Hiene on the side line and wearing a head set so he can here the plays.  Hiene said in numerous interviews that Jay was helpfull in keeping him calm after each series.  Which is all he can do.  Leave it to the coaches to coach and the players to play and support.  Did you really expect Jay to shove Martz aside and take over as OC cause he couldnt play?

I dare anybody to challenge these facts.

To all of you judging Cutler. How can you tell that he did not help Hanie? did you have a camera focused on the guy for the whole game? or are you basing your judgment on the 50 seconds on tv that showed Cutler on the sidelines? Also enough with the Rivers and Brees injury comparisons. Rivers and Brees were pulled from the game when they were injured, followed by a week of rehab till they played again. So it is quite an unfair comparison.

John Madden sounds off on Cutler critics

John Madden is a used car salesman and it sounds like a lot of football fans are buying his worthless commentary. Star QB's need to be pampered because there are chased by insensitive defensive linemen. Madden is so out of touch with football it's hilarious. Cutler is irrevalent because he's not a good teammate. Period.

Cutler is overcome by self pity. Which is okay. But real fans are going to move on to the true professionals.

I agree. Because of diabetes he can't stand next to the third string qb and encourage and exhort him with his experience. Because of diabetes he can't cheer on his teamates. Poor fellow. Cry after you lose, not when the game is still going on!!!!!

Too bad Caleb Hanie disagrees with you.  But you know better than himm since you were on the sidelines watching Cutler the whole second half.
