John Madden sounds off on Cutler critics

John Madden is as passionate about football as anyone alive. Still, it’s not often that he gets riled up. J. Madden (US Presswire)

Appearing Thursday on Sirius radio, the legendary commentator sounded off on the Jay Cutler criticism. Here’s what Madden said (via Pro Football Talk):

“I’ve been in football for over 50 years. I’ve never questioned a player’s toughness. I never have.  Whether it was in coaching, broadcasting, whatever.

“There’s no one in the NFL that has a tougher job to do than Jay Cutler. I think playing quarterback in the NFL is the toughest thing you can do. I think throwing a forward pass and having guys rushing you and hitting you when you’re looking downfield and throwing the ball is the toughest act you have to do.”

After talking about how Cutler plays with Type 1 diabetes, Madden picked up the intensity.

“And then people are looking at him, they put a camera on him, and they say they don’t like his demeanor,” he said. “Demeanor hell!
“Live a day in his shoes. Type I diabetes is not a daytime thing.  It’s not a week thing.  It’s not a month thing.  It’s a life thing.  And it’s every day, and it’s every day for 24 hours.”

Madden’s grandson suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

Madden must think Cutler with that arm is Brett Favre.
Heh.

Disses on toughnes are stupid, I don't doubt Cutlers toughness in the least bit.  It was more the fact that Hanie was able to make that offense produce when he was out there.

Wow....PackAtHeart has to be the stupidest person on the planet!  How did he manage to even turn on the computer to type that idiotic post?  Wow, diabetes is the only lifetime disease you wouldn't mind having?  Nice dude.  I hope you have an awful Super Bowl weekend.

John Madden sounds off on Cutler critics

Wow - so refreshing to come here and read a troll-free article unlike nfl and espn. The Packer trolls and bitter Denver fans seem to congregate there.  To the MD who posted here - good call.  Madden standing up for Cutler - good call.  The main reason behind the Cutler bashing is the fact that the media doesn't like that he doesn't play their game. So when the chance arose to start another Cutler character witch hunt and try to bus-chuck him, boy did they swarm. But none of that matters. You're talking about a guy with type 1 diabetes, took 50 some-odd sacks (led nfl) and refuses to slide when he takes off with the ball. And guess what? He never complained once. Can't question his toughness or heart, sorry. Packer trolls and other unintelligent folks like to jump at that but sorry, no sale. Cutler is a good qb and a tough kid. Get some new material, kiddos.

It amazes me how everyone can judge a person's character by the look on his face, without even ever meeting him.  Jay was labeled a whiner by someone in the media when he wanted to be traded from Denver, and everyone jumped on the label bandwagon.  It amazes me how everyone can type insults behind an unknown screen name.  I met Jay in a mall food court, where he was very friendly and autographed a hat for my son.  Jay is tough; as an M.D. I can tell you that you can walk with a Grade 2 MCL sprain (which is a 50-60% tear with stretching of the remainder of the ligaments).  If you try to go side to side, your knee will buckle.  Thus, regardless of pain, you cannot quarterback with this type of injury.  Don't write things you wouldn't say to someone's face, and do a little research before you make ignorant comments.  Some people aren't raised well!

Not only do I concur with you about the comment on Diabetes, but I would like to take this a step further.  In 2019 coming to the end of the decade, the comment that "As Far as Diabetes, come on, it's about the only "lifetime disease" you wouldn't mind having" will be in the running for dumbest commentof the decade.  I hope that poster does not have offspring.  And if the original poster is reading - offspring means children.

'Long Snappers that "play " their position for 25+++++ years because it's hardly a position.

There's plenty of positions that can be used to counter John Madden's point about how all football players are "so tough " and all that..

As far as Diabetes, come on, it's about the only "lifetime disease" you wouldn't mind having.  Compare it to someone with a real one like Multiple Sclerosis and realize that it's so easily managed by lifestyle changes and get annoyed at anyone that puts it in comparison with ones like MS..

MS would be "Take shots every day or GIANT painful ones every week and cross your fingers that it doesn't get worse" for a comparison..  Not to mention "Oh, too bad, the MS affected another part of your brain, now you can't walk and your left side of your body can't move anymore."

Diabetes would be "Your low on blood sugar, eat a cookie and follow your regimen this time idiot." for another comparison..

It kind of pisses me off for lots of reasons..

Don't try and blame it on or hide behind his freaking diabetes..'

After reading your post, I think I wouldn't mind having a disease that made me blind, or incapable of using the Internet, or maybe a disease that made me unable to understand English. I don't usually point out the stupidity of someone's post, but the lack of intelligence you've displayed here is impressive and worthy of being singled out.
