John Madden is as passionate about football as anyone alive. Still, it’s not often that he gets riled up. J. Madden (US Presswire)

Appearing Thursday on Sirius radio, the legendary commentator sounded off on the Jay Cutler criticism. Here’s what Madden said (via Pro Football Talk):

“I’ve been in football for over 50 years. I’ve never questioned a player’s toughness. I never have.  Whether it was in coaching, broadcasting, whatever.

“There’s no one in the NFL that has a tougher job to do than Jay Cutler. I think playing quarterback in the NFL is the toughest thing you can do. I think throwing a forward pass and having guys rushing you and hitting you when you’re looking downfield and throwing the ball is the toughest act you have to do.”

After talking about how Cutler plays with Type 1 diabetes, Madden picked up the intensity.

“And then people are looking at him, they put a camera on him, and they say they don’t like his demeanor,” he said. “Demeanor hell!
“Live a day in his shoes. Type I diabetes is not a daytime thing.  It’s not a week thing.  It’s not a month thing.  It’s a life thing.  And it’s every day, and it’s every day for 24 hours.”

Madden’s grandson suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

Yes cut the guy some slack already. He plays through diabetes and never once have i heard him bring it up as a problam or an exuse. He plays behind a crappy line and has gotten more than his fair share of hits this year. Yes it was a playoff game, but if he couldnt go he could not play. All Nfl players(I hope but maybe the headcases are the excemptions) have the talent and the drive and will to play the game. From what i have heard they didnt even want to put him back in the second half but he got them to give him a series to see if he could play through it,and decided he could not.If for some reason you dont like him as a player fine, everyone is entitled to their opions but dont insult him as a quiter. Unless you have played pro as a qb you dont even have a clue the punishment a body takes over a season.

I'd rather have Tebow than Cutler and I'm a Broncos fan. Marshall was easily replaced too. Broncos fans didn't care that they were traded, they didn't like how it went down. It was McDaniels s*#t-eating attitude that pissed people off. Cutler was making demands (he ain't Elway and hasn't earned anything) that a 3 year player coming off his 1st full year shouldn't be doing, and Marshall was making Terrell Owens seem like Rod Smith. They were jackasses. It didn't help that Josh threw the picks in garbage.

My fool comment was not geared towards Madden or cutler, but the guy that said diabetes has nothing to do with it. It may not have, but Cutler is a tough quarterback with top notch skills. I've seen him in person make line backers miss and put his head down against multiple players to get extra yards etc. People are far too hard on this professional athlete.

Comparing your baseball game and thrown out back to cutlers torn ligament (yes a sprain there IS a tear) while trying not to get killed by professional athletes trying to take his head off is honestly rather dumb.  I've never torn a ligament in my knee but I have in my ankle.  It is NOT something many people are going to be able to play though.  This guy has been hit all season and keeps getting up and got yall farther then a lot of people thought he would at the start of the season.  Blame the offensive line if your gonna blame anyone for letting him get hit so often.  As far as letting down his team Urlacher and many others were speaking out saying Cutler did NOT just quit on the team.  However sitting on your sofa watching the game i'm sure you have far more insight into what was really going on right?  As a vikings fan I pretty much hate the bears in general anyway but the way yall are crushing your own quarterback is rather sickening.

I don't think this has anything to do with Type 1, it has to do with heart and Cutler doesn't have any. Heart for the game. It's a little hard to beleive he was so bad off when he's walking on the sideline and taking stairs after the game with no difficulty. I love that his teammates stuck up for the guy but privately I bet they have some doubts. For Madden it's probably less to do with Cutler and a whole lot to do with personal issues. He's right about Type 1 diabetes but off-course with the actual topic.

Diabetes has nothing to do with this. Cutler quit, plain and simple. Didn't Jordan play sick. DIdn't Foreman throw up after fighting Holyfiled. I, myslef, threw my back out playing baseball in a championship game and kept playing (and suffered for 2 weeks after) because the game was that imortant. Cutler had to shake it off and come back. He let down his team and his city. Did you see the bum that replaced him? Enjoy your off season Cutler, running around with an "actress" and your millions of dollars knowing that you screwed up. Man up, dude. Admit that you were having an off day and you threw in the towel. I still think Cutler is a good QB, but you now have to question is heart.

For all the Cutler haters out there - many Broncos fans wish Josh McDaniels never was the Broncos HC and that Jay Cutler had never been traded to the Bears.  Kyle Orton is 10 times the wuss you guys make Cutler sound like, and the true definition of overrated is Tim Tebow.   The Bears have a bright future with Jay Cutler and a good draft with an emphasis on O-line and a premier WR.  The Broncos, meanwhile, have been gutted and need at least two excellent drafts to be in the playoff mix.
