John Madden is as passionate about football as anyone alive. Still, it’s not often that he gets riled up. J. Madden (US Presswire)

Appearing Thursday on Sirius radio, the legendary commentator sounded off on the Jay Cutler criticism. Here’s what Madden said (via Pro Football Talk):

“I’ve been in football for over 50 years. I’ve never questioned a player’s toughness. I never have.  Whether it was in coaching, broadcasting, whatever.

“There’s no one in the NFL that has a tougher job to do than Jay Cutler. I think playing quarterback in the NFL is the toughest thing you can do. I think throwing a forward pass and having guys rushing you and hitting you when you’re looking downfield and throwing the ball is the toughest act you have to do.”

After talking about how Cutler plays with Type 1 diabetes, Madden picked up the intensity.

“And then people are looking at him, they put a camera on him, and they say they don’t like his demeanor,” he said. “Demeanor hell!
“Live a day in his shoes. Type I diabetes is not a daytime thing.  It’s not a week thing.  It’s not a month thing.  It’s a life thing.  And it’s every day, and it’s every day for 24 hours.”

Madden’s grandson suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

I do have to agree, though.  We can't judge a guy just by the look on his face.  Cutler deserves the benefit of the doubt.  He had a great season.

----------Well, the guy obviously has alzheimers; becaue I can think of dozens of times, just in the brodcast booth, where he has questioned people's toughness.

I questioned Cutler's demeanor but after hearing Madden I certianly had no right to question Cutler's demeanor.  When Madden talks, he knows football, played it, coached it, was a broadcaster and is rightfully in the Hall of Fame.  He is your expert and he should be heard.

Spot on, Madden!  Seems people forget that Cutler lives with Type 1 diabetes and it is not an easy thing to do.  That just might account for his "scowl" and attitude.  Definitely harder to play with a body that needs constant medication and monitoring than being diabetes free.  The real cowards are the guys posting smack on Twitter while laying on their couch, probably drunk too.

Wiscgator, you can't be serious. You obviously know jack sh*t about Diabetes or knee injuries. And who died and made you a football god? Do you seriously think you know more about football than John Madden? Your lack of respect for a legend shows YOUR heart. You have no idea what it takes to go out there and get pounded all game by 6'5 270lb players. You armchair QBs and your "he sucks", "he should of done this", etc..need to just be quiet.

And before you dumbass Bears "fans" start bashing your own QB, try blaming your sh*tty O-Line. He got destroyed all year long.

BEARS

No qb is good enough to win a superbowl with the bears! They coach defense and have destroyed any QB that plays there since the last superbowl days. They need a change in the offensive and QB coaches, maybe then someone will take that great defense to a superbowl.

And I guess Dan Marino didn't have what it took to win a SB either. Who are you to say someone doesn't have it?

No, it does make sense.  If you had Diabetes you would know that getting excited and pumped causes adrenaline to be produced.  Which in turn cause you to have a bigger crash with your blood sugar.  You see a guy that doesn't show emotion and say he has no heart, I show you a guy that is trying to keep everything under control.  BTW Tony Dungy didn't show emotion on the sideline when he coached, does that mean he has no heart.  Get Real.
