John Madden is as passionate about football as anyone alive. Still, it’s not often that he gets riled up. J. Madden (US Presswire)

Appearing Thursday on Sirius radio, the legendary commentator sounded off on the Jay Cutler criticism. Here’s what Madden said (via Pro Football Talk):

“I’ve been in football for over 50 years. I’ve never questioned a player’s toughness. I never have.  Whether it was in coaching, broadcasting, whatever.

“There’s no one in the NFL that has a tougher job to do than Jay Cutler. I think playing quarterback in the NFL is the toughest thing you can do. I think throwing a forward pass and having guys rushing you and hitting you when you’re looking downfield and throwing the ball is the toughest act you have to do.”

After talking about how Cutler plays with Type 1 diabetes, Madden picked up the intensity.

“And then people are looking at him, they put a camera on him, and they say they don’t like his demeanor,” he said. “Demeanor hell!
“Live a day in his shoes. Type I diabetes is not a daytime thing.  It’s not a week thing.  It’s not a month thing.  It’s a life thing.  And it’s every day, and it’s every day for 24 hours.”

Madden’s grandson suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

Damn it, I was expecting something more then a comment that god damn generic...

Madden's great and it's hard to dislike him, but come on!!

Ugh, I'm torn..

Zacky, keep preachin....I agree....My thing is this...As a Bear's fan, yeah I was disappointed, but at the same time, it's not like he left the game because he had a cold?????  Type II MCL tear is no walk in the park.  What did fans want him to do, hobble and hop and around and throw dink and dunk passes?  If he would've gone back in the game, then the fans would've been on his @ss for being selfish...SOME fans are retarded!!!!  On another note, I think that Caleb Hanie should be 2nd string and Todd Collins should be released, what a joke!

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but that means so am I if I think your opinion is completely moronic. Or even if I don't.

My bottom line is this. And I say this often. WHO GIVES A RAT'S ASS? Were any of you personally affected because Cutler didn't return to the field? Did you lose a because the Bears lost? Who's to say they would've won even if he stayed in? Those of you who say he has no heart are pathetic, IMO. More than likely, you've never played professional football, yet, because you're entitled to an opinion, you question the man's character and determination. At the end of the day, are you personally affected by it?

Point is this: why take such a passionate stance on something that has little to no bearing on your own personal life? Also, it's pretty cowardly to assault someone's character behind the safety of the computer screen when you know damn well you wouldn't speak the very same words to someone's face.

All 3 qbs mentioned above would have played in that game...thats the difference.  Cutler is the new LT (Tomlinson) when it comes to clutch performances.  I dont question his toughness, I question his heart!  If I was a Bears fan, I would have been pissed off...you play all year and your gonna sit out the 2nd half of a championship game?    They would have had to drag Favre or Elway off the field...those dudes were warriors.  IMO, this guy has no heart.

You are a complete and utter moron who knows nothing about football if that is all you know. Marino, Fouts, and Jim Kelly never won a title either so I suppose you don't think they are good also. Peyton Manning won after 9 years. Elway won his last 2 years. And Rivers, McNabb, Schaub, Romo, and Vick have never won either.
What you don't seem to realize is NFL is a team sport not the NBA where 2 stars can carry the team to a title. Brady and Rothlisberger won their first titles by their Defense. Had nothing to do with their play.
I am pretty certain you did not even think the Bears would make the playoffs, let alone win the division and get the 2 seed in the playoffs and play for the NFC championship. But they did by their D AND Cutler. He didn't have an o-line and had no receivers. In Denver he had no running game whatsoever.
Name a team in the playoffs with a worse o-line and receiving core... Chances are you can't because there were none.
As I said you are a complete and utter moron and the more you speak the more it will show.
