Eric Smith fined $10K for hit on Emmanuel Sanders

Jets safety Eric Smith did a pretty good job filling in for Jim Leonhard after Leonhard's season-ending injury. But it also ending him costing him, financially, as the safety was reportedly hit with a $10,000 fine for his hit on Emmanuel Sanders in the second quarter of the AFC Championship game.

That's according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, and it's not the first time Smith's been fined this season -- he got nailed $7,500 for crushing Wes Welker earlier in the year.

Smith also got nailed for a $50,000 fine against Anquan Boldin back in 2008 to the tune of $50,000, so this isn't his first run-in with the law, needless to say.

Given the warning the NFL handed out before the divisional playoff games, it's no surprise to see them hand out fines now, even if the amounts (like the $10,000 Julius Peppers was fined for his hit in the NFC Championship game) might seem a little low.

First off he hit him with his shoulder, not helmet to helmet like Farrior hit Greene and what about the hit on Sanchez by Harrison, the elbow to the head. The NFL should take a long hard look at alot of the hits from this season.

Oh, ffs. Go watch MMA or boxing or something if you just want to see people beating the crap out of each other. Contrary to the constant whining, football is NOT about hitting people as hard as you can. If it was, they wouldn't have bothered refining pads, helmets and protection over time. They wouldn't even bother playing football. They'd just play rugby.

Why aren't you "traditionalists" decrying the Revolution helmet? Why not demand they go back to the leather caps? The rules are made to protect the health of the  players, who have to live beyond the game . They try something new and if it works, they stick with it. If it isn't, they don't. Oh, no! You can't take out the QB's legs anymore! Ask Tom Brady or Peyton Manning whether or not they'd like to end their careers the way Joe Theismann did. Any Steelers fans want to trade Big Ben in for a "return" to the "good old days"? How about the

Any of you ever go look up one of those players with a career-ending injury? Ever find out what getting bashed in the skull repeatedly actually does? What about the ones who can barely walk without excruciating pain?

The sad thing is, all the "traditionalists" aren't even traditionalists. I played football, and I was taught how to tackle. Guess what? It doesn't involve spearing someone in the head. The NFL changed as the players got bigger and faster, and the hits got bigger and bigger. Hit artists began to take over defenses, and too many guys were all about the big hit instead of the tackle. So why aren't the "traditionalists" crying about the lack of technique? Simple. They're NOT traditionalists. They're armchair bloodsport enthusiasts. They're the mindless mob at the Coliseum. They're the idiots who forward you those stupid videos where some guy snaps his leg on his skateboard, or gets hit in the nuts. Go watch America's "Funniest" Home Videos ; there's plenty of that for you without having to bother with offenses and defenses and gameplans and talent and preparation and execution and throwing and running and blocking and - gasp - TACKLING.

As for the penalties, I can at least agree that there are too many different penalties that extend or kill drives, and some of them are just silly. But as for the "put flags on 'em" and "it's a man's game" and "put on a dress" crowd, grow up. You sound like idiots, and you display laughable ignorance about the nature and history of the game.

Let's just put flags on them and play flag football.  It was a perfectly clean hit, and Smith even let up on the hit.  The Harrison hit on Sanchez was actually dirtier but no fine.  The NFL has zero consistency on these calls.  If a WR is going to run down the middle of the field he's supposed to expect to get hit.  That is how the NFL I grew up watching always was.  This new NFL is a joke.

I can only imagine what Jerry Rice and Montana would have been able to do with these rules in place.  When the stoppage happens next year I hope at least Goodell gets canned.

the following paragraph is brought to you by the Redundant Department of Redundancy:

"Smith also got nailed for a $50,000 fine against back in 2008 to the tune of $50,000 , so this isn't his first run-in with the law, needless to say. "

it just goes to show that it doesn't take much to be a "journalist" these days.  i guess all of us are now potential journalist.  since these half-a$$ed attempts are written from home, i'm guessing that the Brinson doesn't have a proof-reader or copy editor standing by.  well how about a grammar correction tool?  you would never see a Bert Sugar article go through like this.  a tremendous display of a lack of professionalism.  if you don't give a s**t what your article looks like, then why bother?   this is probably another reason why people watch too much television or is it vis-a-vis?
