Report: Eagles will franchise tag Vick

It sounds like the Eagles know where they want their offense to go next season, and it sounds like they know who they want to lead them there.

Not surprisingly, that’d be QB Michael Vick. And to wrap him up for another season without having to commit a long-term contract to him, the Eagles will place the franchise tag on Vick, according to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Vick, of course, was amazing for much of the season, supplanting Kevin Kolb as the official Donovan McNabb replacement and then leaving Kolb in a sticky situation (probably half the teams would use him as a starting quarterback, and unfortunately for him, the Eagles are not one of those teams).

But Schefter also writes Philadelphia will look to deal Kolb – who’s slated to make $1.4 million next year but also desperately wants to start. Considering the amount of interest Kolb should draw from other clubs, look for him not to be in an Eagles uniform next season.

Report: Eagles will franchise tag Vick

Oddly enough, during a different CBA negotiation year a while back, it was the Player's Union that suggested the whole Franchise and Transition tag system.  Now of course, it's the players who don't like the tags... but it was originally their representation that brought those tags into existence.

As much as the players have grown to dislike the Franchise label though, I wouldn't be surprised if the Union tries to negotiate it away during the current CBA process.  It's not really a great system for the teams either, since it makes the player more expensive and usually unhappy.  This may end up being the last off-season that it exists... at least in its current form.

"It used to be that a team with a strong defense could make up for a substandard quarterback"

How did the conversation get back to the Steelers?

I understand your frustration with Vick playing in the league.  I don't think a single Eagles fan is condoning what he did...despite how the national media portrays Eagles fans.  But you lost all credibility when you used a sentence that included Mannings, Brady and Young.

KLM11, you hit the nail on the head.I hate Vick more thanI can even begin to describe.I can't think of another human being I hate more.Vick and the classless Eagle fans deserve each other.Vick is not an elite qb like both Mannings, Brady, even Vince Young.Anyone who has an ounce of NFL knowledge know Kolb is much better than the dog killer. Not enough bad things can happen to Vick, the Eagles, and theirdrunken, cruel fans. They fit well together.
One Question:When they tag Vick, will he also be neutered?

Your so right about Vick, but because the Eagles and all their low life fans suck Vick off so much they won't trade him.  Vick is not an elite NFL QB and he will never lead the Eagles or any other team to a Super Bowl, so why have him on your team or in the league for that matter.  The NFL could have made a real statement by banning this scumbag from the NFL for life, but instead they just let him right back in and now the rest of the ignorants think they can do the same.  The NFL is a joke, Vick is a sick piece of shiz and I hope he gets killed by a pack of stray dogs this off season.

Nfceastfan, you do realize the Vick said right after the season that he would happily play for the franchise tag, Which I believe is about 16 mil for the season and if that isn't enough reason to play hard then what is? I wish someone would "violate my rights" for 16 million. Please try to keep it in perspective. Of course he would prefer a longer deal, but 16 mil guaranteed is not too shabby.

I agree that the short-term contract is a slap in the face, but players who get "tagged" end up making more than they usually would during a year's span.
The franchise tag salary is at what, 9 million or something?  That's a lot of cash.

Franchise Tag should be illegal. If I were a player and was franchised TAG'd I would play lack-see-dais-ical. I dont care if you agree with me or not but I think a TAG is a discriminatory violation of rights. I dont care what you all think. I would not be surprised to see him not give a shit this year. Who would want to play their hearts out risking the possiblity of career ending injuries for a franchise Tag? Vivk owes the Eagles nothing. The Eagles got more than they paid for in Vick. They are even after this year. Now this coming season Vick is definitely underpaid and now Tagged. If I were Vick I would ask to be traded or ask for a long term deal. He is at the age where a one year deal is not worth it. Not at that position and not with the Eagles  terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible Offensive line. It is not worth it for Vick to play hard. He should give an adequate effort for that Tag, but dont play hard Vick the Eagles dont care about your future so you should do the same. Any player Tagged should just yawn constantly...

The Eagle should deal Vick while his value is high!!   Vick is got battered and was slowed with injuries as the eason wore on.  This will be the story every year with his playing style.

Vick had a great year..but now is the time to get something for him.

Kevin Kolb would be alright as a starting QB but the is no way he is worth what the Eagles are going to be asking for him! I think I heard reports somewhere that they would want at least 2 first round draft picks for a qb that what starting 3 games last year, hasnt proved himself yet and only has 1 year left on his contract. Does anyone really believe Kevin Kolb is really worth all that????
