ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have fired offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski. Bratkowski had been with the club since 2001.

The Bengals originally indicated they wouldn’t be making this much-talked-about change, though suspicions grew when Marvin Lewis was recently spotted having dinner with Brad Childress.

One player presumably happy about this move is Cedric Benson. After rushing for over 1,200 yards in a run-first scheme in ’09, the running back grew frustrated when the Bengals, after acquiring Terrell Owens, Jordan Shipley and Jermaine Gresham, shifted to more of an aerial attack in ’10.

Because of that dinner with Lewis, Childress will be the early favorite to replace Bratkowski. Offensive coordinator in Cincy is an attractive job that offers relative autonomy, given that Lewis’ forte is on the other side of the ball.

Now that Bratkowski is gone it is time for another problem coach on this team-offense line coach paul alexander, this offense line has been horrible for years and how he has kept a job is crazy

It's a move that's way to little and way to late. The problem with the Bengals goes back to 1991 when Mike Brown inherited the team. I will say this, Mike Brown worked really hard and his effort has finally paid off. Cincinnati is now a baseball town again. Bob Castellini has to be sitting across the street watching the circus going on at Paul Brown Stadium and thanking his lucky stars.

I did not thing that the problem this year was with the Bengals offense.  They put up good numbers and lots of points.....it's just the defense gave up a little more of both.  The defensive coordinator should be looking over his shoulders..... I think this also is in direct relationship to Palmer's wish to be traded.  Maybe firing the OC keeps Palmer in Bengal land for at least one more season.

Why are steeler fans commenting on a bengals article? Your team is in the super bowl, why keep bashing them when we already know they are a disfunctional organization? You should be worried about Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers! Brat needed to go but I think he will have some success at the college level if he chooses to go that route! Nobody can succeed in Cincy, so it will be interesting to see how he does, when he lands another job. The bengals need to find a way to fix their so called good locker room! You never see these guys protect their own, it's almost like they are a  bunch of individuals calling themselves a team! Whereas; the Steelers and Jets are like a family and you  just don't see that in Cincy!

The timing is odd-- more than likely due to the Bengals coaching (ehm scouting) at the Senior Bowl.  This was a move that had to be made for more than one reason.  First, the Bengal offense was beyond stale.  It is no exxageration to say the play calling was predictable.  My 9 year old daughter knew as well as anyone that on 2nd and long, Brat would call an off tackle run with Benson 85% of the time.  So, yes Brat had to go in order for the offense to be able to move forward.  Second, when your $100 million QB indicates he'd rather retire instead of remaining in the current system, you know it is time for a change.  When season ticket holders are in open revolt due to a lack of commitment by the ownership to address glaring needs for change, you know the axe must fall.  For Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis to have any semblance of credibility and any hope of getting Carson Palmer to buy into 2011 as the starting QB, something had to give.  Friendship or not, Brat had to go.  I'm just surprised that Brat wasn't promoted to a front office job considering he had 1 year left on his contract.  It will be interesting to see who the Bengals hire, but one thing is for sure, the mobs still have their pitchforks at the ready.
