Larry Fitzgerald: 'I want to be on a winner'

Despite a pretty gaudy stat line, Larry Fitzgerald didn't have the greatest of years in 2010. That's mainly the fault of Derek Anderson, Max Hall and John Skelton, but certainly the Cardinals organization deserves some blame for entering the year with that spectacular group of quarterbacks.

But even if you don't want to point fingers towards the past, there will be some questions about the future if Arizona doesn't improve the surroundings for Fitz, who emphasized this week that he very much doesn't want to suffer through another season like last year.

"I want to be on a winner,"Fitzgerald told ESPN's Mike Sando. "I want to put myself in the best position to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. I would love to do that in Arizona. That is my goal, to retire a Cardinal. They have treated me well. I love the state, but I want to win and that is really where my mind is."

But here's the rub: Fitzgerald is going to be a free agent after 2011, and if he's serious about wanting to win in Arizona, he might need to make some concessions in the negotiations.

That seems fairly unlikely to happen, especially considering the way Fitz saw Kurt Warner treated after he attempted to give Arizona a good-faith discount, which means Fitzgerald and his management will be seeking maximum money.

In doing so, even if he only ends up getting fair market value for his considerable skill set, he's inherently hampering the Cardinals' long-term ability to build a winner around him.

They can obviously still compete and pay him at the same time, of course, because it's been done prior to 2010. But wanting to a) get paid, b) play for a winner and c) stay in the same spot is a lot of cake to have and hold all at the same time.

7 pages of unofficial votes & comments

I read all 7 pages & kept score. In my opinion, rollinman made the most astute comment, calling this a nonstory& expecting Fitz to stay in Arizona.I wanna agree with that, but the dude said he wants to go to a winner. That's not Arizona.......3 more predicted he'd stay in AZ as well.
3 said KC.They could almost be a winner
3 said Minn, including one who said a fitz signing might bring back Farve. That's beyond hilarious.
3 said Indy.Definately a winner, but signing fitz 'cause Reggie Wayne is upset really solves nothing.
2 said GB.Both dreaming.be happy with your 13-10 win Sunday
2 said the Steelers.Fitz wont catch passes from rapists.
1 vote each for Cincy,Dallas,Atlanta,Detroit,Giants,S.F., & Stl.Atlanta is highly overrated and the rest are far from "winners"
9 voted for New England, including me(once). The Pats have the most piks in the draft;Something like 4 or 5 of the first 34?They then supply Arizona with lots of youg, rebuilding talent.Since Arizona is almost constantly rebuilding, thiis might be the best match of all.Fitz has 2, maybe 3 years of being a #1 WR.The Pats have 2 great 2nd year TE's & some young talent at WR, including Brandon Tate.Don't forget about Branche. He's not an every play guy anymore, but very dangerous nonethelesss. In 3 years Fitz will take over for Branche. He will also have at least 2 rings and all will be right with the world.

Lol, coyote problem! That's awesome. The Eagles don't really need Fitz, if D.Jackson could've stayed healthy in that playoff game things might have been different. No matter how much people try to sell me on Vick being a top QB I will always think his accuracy will never be that good. Anybody can toss a ball as far as they can and let Jackson run like the wind. The Eagles should still trade Vick and keep Kolb.

inmymind, as a former Eagle fan I strongly disagree. The Eagles send the darling of the NFL, D.K.Michael Vick.....They will take him in a heartbeat because   Arizona has a serious coyote problem. That way you keep Kolb and Maclin & have Fitz as well. You'd win every game in your division.

Sportsnut, going to the SB 1 time and losing does not make you a winner----by definition alone.

That Eagles trade thought is actually pretty good. Or trade him to the Bengals for picks. The Cards could end up with Gabbert and Green if they worked they're cards right.

what part of "my goal (is) to retire a Cardinal" sounds like he wants to be somewhere else?  Nice rumor, but up and coming sports writers pull stories out of nowhere with "multiple unnamed sources" that are all fabricated.  Brinson is basically saying that the Cardinals won't pay him (which they will), and shouldn't pay him if they're a smart franchise.  Why wouldn't you pay him if you're the Cards GM?  Since we drafted him we've gone from the worst team in the league to nearly taking home the big prize.  He's the best player to put on a Cardinals uniform since the Aenias Williams and the Cards leader in the locker room, plus they started negotiating a contract 2 weeks ago.  This whole story is BS.

If the Cards actually did trade him to the Bears they'd better get Hester and a pick back. Hester is dynamite on returns but average at wideout. Fitzgerald is one of the best in the league.
