Remember when Lovie Smith was on the hot seat? Word is the Bears head coach will be sitting pretty in the very near future. Jon Mullin of CSNChicago.com says Smith could soon sign a two-year contract extension that would include a raise.

Smith made $4.8 million in 2010. Mullin estimates that his salary could jump to the $5.5 million range that he’s believed to be getting in 2011.

The highest paid coaches in the league – Bill Belichick, Mike Shanahan, Pete Carroll – make over $6 million per season. Mullin’s logic is that the market has been set by the recent extensions of Mike McCarthy (three years, $15 million) and John Harbaugh (three years, $12 million).

Smith is 63-49 in seven seasons with the Bears, with three division titles and one Super Bowl appearance.

It will give the Packers another goal next year, to get yet another head coach fired from his job.

Only a matter of time, it really is.

Lovie Smith extension coming soon?

Big mistake, Jerry (Angelo). Why not wait for next season? You think teams will be lining up to steal this guy away? Lovie has ruined Devin Hester, the best return guy, ever. His Tampa 2 defense is so predictable it's not even funny. He has to have a say for drafting players, which is horrible, considering us sports fans are like "who the hell is this guy?". And can he ever convert a 4th and 1? I mean the first Detroit game, we were down by 2 and he doesn't kick the field goal?!!! And what about his emotionless demeanor? Look, Lovie seems like a good guy, and all, but why not wait until after this season? I thought there was no doubt we would make the playoffs after the super bowl, yet it took 4 years. And I'm still pissed that Hester isn't returning everything!!! Put him back there!!!!

Lovie Smith extension coming soon?

Lovie finally managed to do well. He finally managed to learn to make in game adjustments(when his job was finally on the line.)

He does not need, nor does he desrve this extension.

Let's see what he does next season before we go giving the guy another free pass.

Lovie Smith extension coming soon?

He coached well last season.  My biggest gripe about Lovie is his stubborness and inability to adjust.  And they definately did a much better job with those things last year.  Add to that a division title and getting to the NFC championship, while being predicted to win between 4 and 8 games, and it is tough to argue with the extension.  I just hope that last year was the beginning of him coming into his own, and that he continues to improve.
