The New Orleans Saints are ready to move on without the services of Jeremy Shockey and have cut the tight end loose, the team announced on Tuesday.

The news, as first reported by Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, isn't terribly, um, shocking in all honesty.

Shockey played in 13 games -- just 11 where he started -- in 2010 and recorded just 41 catches for 408 yards, both career lows. Shockey dealt with injuries throughout the season, but also managed to record three touchdowns.

"Jeremy played an important role in helping our team bring a Super Bowl championship to New Orleans," coach Sean Payton said via a team statement. "He contributed to the success of our offense, both as a pass-catcher and run blocker, and we’re appreciative of his efforts."

The decision to scuttle the former Pro Bowler may have more to do with the emergence of Jimmy Graham (a fellow "U" alum) who caught 31 balls for 356 yards and five touchdowns in his rookie season.

Although the $5 million that Shockey was due in 2011 probably didn't help, either -- that's too much money to be paying a tight end whose name value greatly exceeds his production, particularly with a talent like Graham waiting in the wings.

Well, he is quickly wearing out his welcome in the NFL! I wonder if there are any teams left that would take a chance on him? He is one of the biggest jerks in football!

Shockey and Eli - bad chemistry

I said 8 rows behind the Giants bench during that disasterous (for the G-men) Vikings game in the Meadowlands a few years ago when Eli threw 4 INT's and Shockey was in Eli's ear the entire time the offence was on the sidelines. I could tell by Eli's body language that he did not appreciate all the flack that Shockey was giving him. When Shockey was hurt, Eli started to play better and think better without that idiot yelling him all the time.
Keep Shockey out of football!  He is a bad apple on the sidelines.

i think Shockey is a very good tight end all around. he can run good for a tight end, which with his size makes for a mismatch is most cases, has good hands, and blocks well. having said that, the problem is that he is overpaid for the production he gave last year. you cant deny that he put up alot of very strong seasons in NY. what it boils down to is Graham appears that he can fill Shockey's shoes and then some, due to numerous factors. he is younger and will probably stay healthier which directly coralates to more play and more production. also, his age gives New Orleans the hopes of having him around for years to come as long as he is able to produce. finally the $ speaks for itself. Graham will play for about 1/8 the cost of ShockeyMoney mouth...seems like a no brainer.
