Plenty of words have been used to speculate on whether or not Champ Bailey would return to the Denver Broncos (especially given the presence of Patrick Peterson at the top of the draft board), but those words are useless now as the Broncos announced they've reached a new four-year deal with Bailey.

That's according to John Elway on -- where else -- Twitter.

"We are thrilled to announce that the Broncos have agreed to terms on a new four-year contract with cornerback Champ Bailey," Elway tweeted. "The commitment and loyalty that Champ has shown to the Broncos, the city of Denver and this region is exemplary."

"We're fortunate to have Champ with the Broncos for a long time. This is a GREAT day for our entire organization and our fans."

Bailey reportedly put his house on the market earlier in the year, and it certainly didn't seem as if he'd end up coming back to Denver -- despite Elway's earlier praise for the cornerback -- especially as they rebuild (they do know they're rebuilding, right??).

This probably means that the Broncos won't be targeting Peterson now, and opens up the significant possibility for a guy who has some similarities to Julius Peppers (Da-Quan Bowers out of Clemson) to end up for a guy who once coached Peppers (John Fox).

At the very least, they can actually seek to upgrade other defensive areas of need. And either way, Champ's going to retire a Bronco, and a lot of mock drafts are going to get re-drafted first thing tomorrow morning.

Broncos sign Champ Bailey to new 4-year deal

dont understand this....he is washed up as a corner , he constantly gives up too much cushion to wr's and give up chunks of yardage . then when he play tight they blow past bowls the last few years were off rep a denver fan and i watch all the games and he constantly gettin burnt , makes 4 or 5 plays a year!...are they watching these games! watch the film he is done! bad move in my opinion , use him as trade bait and get a steal but no they commit and keep us old in the secondary!

Broncos sign Champ Bailey to new 4-year deal

YEESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!  I have been praying every day for Champ to be re-signed.  Despite all the talk about his age, he is still playing at a very, very high level.  I just think the emergence of Revis and Asomugha coupled with the play of Woodson has taken a lot of the focus off of Champ.  That and the slump the Broncos have experienced the past few seasons.  But it is great to hear that he is coming back, I know that Denver is a happy city tonight (well, kind happy. Losing Melo might have saddened some people.)!

I am actually quite ugly therefore hiding behind my keyboard to write demeaning comments about others.....hahah....actually corners don't last into their mid thirties cuz they have to run.  Look back and see how many corners made a pro bowl in their thirties other than Darrell Green.

I guess he really never did want to play in the superbowl for a chance at a ring.

I think going after bowers or failey will be almost as big a mistake as last years draft. I still dont think timmy will ever be even a good qb in the nfl. But going after fairley that has tude problems and could become another hanesworth with his tude and weight just like bowers is a riskk with his knee plus his weight could become a issue and hurt his already lack of speed off the line. I think the smartest move for Denver is still peterson. When you have the corners like say haynes and hayes at the same time, its tough on a qb. When you hear of cover sacks you get them when you have a pair of corners like bailey & peterson in the game at one time. I think peterson is the second best all around player in the draft but they need help on d not on o. So peterson should be their man.

hey scbull, woodson is older than Champ and both are not playing like fossils. I can still see the Broncs targetting a CB in 2nd or 3rd round as there's no-one opposite Champ. If Bowers knee doesn't recover enough they could still take Peterson and lock down both spots for years to come but it's certainly less likely now.

scBULL makes no sense.  First of all a personal attack on how someone looks shows his character.  Second, what person thinks Denver is better off getting rid of Champ?  Not many that is for sure.

I sort of think Elway knows just a little bit more about football than scBULL.   I also think Champ could teach scBULL some thing about character and manners.  Easy to be a jerk when you are anonomous on the keyboard.

Jerry Jones is getting a Christmas card ready for Elway.  The more corners that can be pushed down to pick #9 the better.  It is nice to see one of the teams expected to take a corner sign some fossil into a four year deal.  Too bad for Broncos fans that Elways brain is about half the mass of his teeth.

This is great news for Bronco Nation!  For the most part Champ was stellar all of last year.  He brings a leadership that Denver D needs in a big way.  I'll happily take Bowers or Fairley in April.  ALL great D's have a great line.  Bowers and Dumervile would be sick for years to come.
