At the NFL combine today, Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland talked about the priority needed to sign DT Paul Soliai, and he said that while the organization and Soliai are negotiating a long-term contract, they weren’t necessarily close to a deal.

That’s why the decision this afternoon to franchise tag Soliai, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, isn’t that much of a surprise.

Yet, considering Soliai made just $550,000 last season and, aside from last year, hadn’t exactly lit up on the field, the fact he could make about $12.5 million if he signs the tender is rather staggering.

Last year, he had his best season, amassing 39 tackles and two sacks, which were better totals than his first three years combined. Still, one good season was enough for his agent, David Canter, to tell reporters earlier this week that he wanted a multiyear contract that was more generous than the one the Dolphins gave Randy Starks (five years, $20.5 million) in 2008.

For now, Soliai will have to live with the $12 million as the two sides continue to negotiate a long-term deal.
