Lovie Smith gets 2-year extension from Bears

Before the 2010 season, Lovie Smith -- and the entire Bears front office -- was on the hot seat. After winning a division title last year, though, he's received a two-year extension from Chicago that keeps him with the team through 2013, the Bears announced Friday.

"Of course I feel great about the extension like I have every year I have been on the job," Smith, the fifth-longest tenured coach in the NFL, said Friday at the combine.

Smith's extension is based on Chicago's performance in 2010 -- after three-straight middling seasons to follow up their 2006 Super Bowl appearance, the Bears bounced back and posted an 11-5 record en route to winning the NFC North.

That doesn't mean that their place in the division is anything close to secure.

"We realize we have the Super Bowl champs in our division and we're looking up to them," Smith said Friday at the combine.

Although he's taken some grief for various coaching decisions, Smith has led Chicago to three division titles since 2005 (second-most in the NFC) and three double-digit win seasons (one of only two teams to do so int hat time span).

Oftentimes, fans and the media lament some of Lovie's gameday decisions, including his use of challenges and willingness to go for it on fourth down. But the 13th coach in Bears history has still come quite close to winning a Super Bowl and showed tremendous improvement in 2010, leading to the reward from the Bears' ownership.

Also worth noting? Lovie's contract now runs up at the same time as Jerry Angelo (2013), meaning they are, once again, in the same boat together. Just like last year.

"Jerry and I work together well," Smith said Friday. "We feel like we're a good combination."

They certainly were last year, and it the Bears apparently believe their combo -- along with Jay Cutler, who happens to be signed through 2013 as well -- is a winner for the future.

Lovie Smith gets 2-year extension from Bears

Your post makes absolutely no sense to me.  I am a huge Bears fan from Minnesota.  Why would I use a Cubs logo when I am a Twins fan?  Your post was one of the dumbest things I've ever read.  If you had even watched the Bears first game against Detroit you wouldn't be saying they were not prepared to play.  They kicked their ass up and down the field and kept fumbling at the Detroit 20 yard line.

Bearsandtwins! That's like Redsoxandjets. Or how about Dodgersandniners. Maybe you could be friends with Bearsandcardinals. Look at all the posts and see who stands out as the contrarian Bearsandtwins. Rather than criticizing other peoples posts and opinions, maybe you should just try to support your own thoughts. Stupid, D-bag White Sox hater I suppose. But too ashamed to use a Cubs logo as his Avatar. Powerful move.

I disagree with the Bears two games of 1st place NFC Teams are tougher than GB's draw. I believe the NFC North plays the NFC South. That leaves Chicago playing Philly and Seattle. Quite frankly, I think the Giants and Rams will be tougher draws than Philly and Seattle in 2011.

The Packers are going to be back healthy in 2011--that's frightening. Aaron Rodgers is a frickin' BEAST.

The Packers won the Super Bowl because they have a very deep roster. Most of their roster Ted Thompson picked up in the draft. I'll say it until I'm blue in the face, the Bears will never win a thing with Genius Angelo as the GM.

Genius Angelo should read Ted Thompson's book on how to build a championship team.

A first place schedule only affects two games.  People act like the Packers played some brutal schedule this year and the Bears had a bunch of creampuffs on the schedule.  14 of the 16 games are played against the same exact teams.

Those of you supporting this further poor decision by Angelo do realize that the Bears play a 1st place schedule next year (if the 2011 season is even played) and wprobably won't be seeing 4 third string QB's like they did in 2010?

You'll all be crying for Lovie's head if the Bears go 6-10 or 7-9 next year...wait and see.

If the Bears had lost that game, which was coached poorly and for which they came out of training camp poorly prepared

I think your post was poorly prepared.  The Bears outgained the Lions something like 520-180 in that game, the only reason it was close is because we had 3 or 4 fumbles in Lions territory.  70 of those yards came on the last drive of the game.  Stupid comment to say the Bears came out of camp unprepared to play the Lions.  The Bears also had 3 timeouts left in that game and 25 seconds.  I'm not guaranteeing they would have gone down and kicked the game winning fg, but the game was not over.  I'm so sick and tired of all these comments about getting "lucky".  We could go through every single team's schedule and say if this didn't happen or this didn't happen blah, blah, blah.  I will admit that Lovie makes some peculiar decisions like the no challenge in the Washington game.  However, this can be said about any coach in the league, they all make some stupid decisions at times.  For example, why would McCarthy challenge that fumble near the sideline in the first game against the Bears.  It happened right in front of him and cost the Packers a valuable timeout that would have given them the ball back with a chance to tie.  Belichick went for it on 4th down against the Colts from his own 25 yard line and cost his team a game.  It's not just Lovie that makes poor decisions, I guarantee I could go through every coach and find a game situation where you scratch your head wondering what they were thinking.

Look at how many starters the bears have on their team that they have acquired through the draft and compare that with others in the league.

Ok, I'll bite. Look at Green Bay's roster and compare that to the piles of worthless Monkey spunk that Genius Angelo has drafted over the past few years. ANGELO CANNOT DRAFT!  Look at his picks from the past 5 years. He cannot draft or evaluate talent.

Green Bay won the Super Bowl because Ted Thompson can build an organization. They had so much depth on their roster. The Bears did not have that..Case in point - Todd Collins. Need I say more ?

Wait a minute..are you really Jerry Angelo posting here????
