Tommie Harris had been a standout Bears DT for five years, beginning in 2004 and leading to three Pro Bowl berths and the 2007 Ed Block Courage Award.

The past two years, though, you could see a decline – he combined for only four sacks in the past two years – and based partly on that, the Bears announced today they’ve released him (along with LB Hunter Hillenmeyer and T Kevin Shaffer).

Harris made only six starts last season (out of 15 games), and considering he was due a $2.5 million bonus before training camp (and a $500,000 workout bonus) and was scheduled to make a base salary of $2.3 million, the move makes financial sense.

But Harris was coach Lovie Smith’s first draft pick, so the move likely saddens the player and the coach.

Also, Bears Rapid Reporter Gene Chamberlain had this to write about Hillenmeyer and a potential controversy that could come from his release.

Writes Chamberlain: "Conspiracy theorists might point to the fact that LB Hunter Hillenmeyer was the Bears' former player rep and a current alternate player rep as a reason he was cut Monday, but the season-ending concussion he suffered in preseason -- as well as past concussion problems -- made his return questionable at best."

Bears release Tommie Harris

Tommie was never the same after his injury. And this season he didn't even try. I'm sad to see Hillenmeyer go though. I remember when he got hurt they said it was a career threatening injury. He was a guy that gave 100% on every play. He'll make a great lb coach.

Bears release Tommie Harris

there are rumors that we will draft on defense in this draft and i think that will be the WORST idea. i am not a fan of drafting defense when the team needs BOTH quarterback and reciever

Do you really think these two positions are the Bears' most pressing needs?  I could see receiver, but quarterback?  Quarterback?  How in the hell is this a priority?

Cutler is their guy, and Hanie has proven to be a very solid backup.  Drafting a quarterback makes no sense at all.

The Bears need to take at least 3 offensive linemen, a defensive tackle, and a cornerback, and then a receiver.

Bears release Tommie Harris

philyfreak1--Read Hunter's take on this before you call out "STUPID." Player rep status had nothing to do with this.  Hunter is smart enough to know his own body.  And for Tommie Harris and not "been injured often", Charlie Sheen knows more about reality than you do.

Bears release Tommie Harris

Tommy Harris is no where near where he used to be. But he will be a nice pick up for some team. If he can stay away from injuries he may turn out to be a great pick up. I'm not ready to say his career is over. If, and I know it's a big if, but if he can get his legs under him and get a bit of the quickness back, Harris will be a nice DT for the price.

Bears release Tommie Harris

Bottom line, the Bears absolutely have to get younger.  They were built to win this year, and they know it.  They have a few pieces that will be around awhile (mostly on offense), but the D-line, the LBs, the CBs, they are all getting up there in years.  Peppers, Briggs, and Urlacher have likely peaked, have maybe 2-3 more seasons of top tier play, and there really isn't anyone else that is worth noting at this time on the D.

Bears release Tommie Harris

Knowing how the Bears operate, the move of releasing Harris and Hillenmeyer is a cost cutting move.  I do agree both players skills have diminished.  The Bears have some younger players who stepped up especially late in the season.

i dont want Kris Jenkins or Haynesworth, DO want Atogwe, he will be the free safety that we havent had and do want Tommie Harris, there are rumors that we will draft on defense in this draft and i think that will be the WORST idea. i am not a fan of drafting defense when the team needs BOTH quarterback and reciever.
