Redskins make it final, release Portis

Washington released C. Portis after a good run (Getty). Posted by Josh Katzowitz

The only surprising aspect of the Redskins announcement today that they had released RB Clinton Portis was that the announcement hadn’t been made Sunday.

As we pointed out the other day, Portis had a great run in Washington, but he had missed 19 games the past two seasons because of injuries, and considering he will turn 30 in September and will cost Washington $8.2 million for the 2011 season, this move was expected.

Especially with the solid play of backup Ryan Torain last season.

“Clinton provided excitement from the very first time he touched the ball as a Redskin and we were lucky to witness every ounce of energy, effort and passion he has given ever since,” Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder said in a statement. “We have been through a lot both on and off of the field and we would like to wish him and his family the very best. He will always be a Redskin and go down as one of the franchise’s all-time greats.”

Portis also released a statement through the team:  “I would like to thank the organization. Dan [Snyder] and Mike [Shanahan] were honest, straight-up people with me. I always appreciated the opportunity from Dan to play here. Being a Redskin was a special part of my life. Coming and being in that organization, I turned from a kid having fun to a man carrying responsibilities. I tried to put the world on my shoulders for Coach Gibbs and the Redskins fans.”

While I am not a Portis fan, Bailey does not play a punishing position like Portis does.  Look at the Barber brothers.  Tiki has been finished a few years now and Ronde is coming back for a 15th season.  I do agree with you that the Redskins have made a lot of bad decisions with Snyder in control.

Old, washed up for several years now. He should go to a team with a part time role for him like LT did with the Jets or just retire and try not to embarass himself like Shaun Alexander.

What ? Are you saying Portis is a hard worker ? This guy has been and always will be a complete clown. He's lazy and has NEVER wanted to practice . If he would have participated in training camp he probably wouldn't have been constantly "hurt".Remember this is a guy who said " I ask my body today. Do you want to practice ? And my body say No ". Complete Clown

Bailey has a brand new contract and Portis is shown the door...the Skins have made some really bad decisions over the years.

C'mon ,they should have shown him the door 3 years ago.Now we get to sit back and watch draft day blunders. My guess is , they trade Cooley to move up and get Newton. Can anybody spell B U S T. I will be super surprised if this isn't what pans out.Good luck fans of Old DC. It's a real shame the team and organization have been shredded by Snyder.

These sports guyses give their bodies to these teams, just to be released when they become a liability.  NFLPA members need to get some guaranteed contracts for a changes, instead of accepting 18 game seasons with no real benefit whatsoever to their well being.  Guaranteed contracts like every other league first, before some whiny 18-game season is accepted because of some terrible upper management team, that is clearly incapable of doing what those players going through.

The other manual labor workerers get the severence for getting hurt trying to do their lazy employerses jobs.  The NFL companies on the otherhand just quit on it's guyses, after they are constantly told off by their subsidiary on-field management teams that are to lazy themselves to get on that field.  With their whiny high audible chit-chats about working hard on every play & disrepects all game long.  Even when they get hurt doing just that, the NFLs just abandon them it seems

Not cool man.  Not cool.

I always thought the Redskins sucked and giving up Champ for Portis brought a smile to my face, with Portis now gone the Redskins will keep on doin what they do best and that's looking up from the bottom of the NFC EAST.

Good Riddance never liked Portis, should have kept Champ Bailey. The next person we should release is Albert Haynesworth and then old Danny Boy Snyder
