The Jets have been expected to release linebacker bust Vernon Gholston at some point, but the report coming out Monday night that they cut Gholston, defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, defensive end Jason Taylor AND right tackle Damien Woody is pretty shocking.

Woody confirmed the news, as first reported by Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, on his Twitter account Monday night.

"Just informed about my release," Woody tweeted. "I want to thank the Jets and all the fans out there ... it was a great ride!"

Gholston, as noted above, is almost expected, because he's been such a tremendous bust since the Jets drafted him sixth overall in 2008.

Taylor provided the Jets with nice defensive depth in 2010, but he's obviously up there in age and a good candidate for retirement. His contract also reportedly called for a $10 million roster bonus, but it's believed he didn't meet the requirements to unlock that.

Jenkins has been unable to make it past October each of the past two seasons and the $3.75 million he's owed (plus roster bonuses) make him a reasonable target to cut.

Gutting Woody from the roster probably hurts the most, but the Jets said they were moving Vladimir Ducasse to right tackle, which makes Woody expendable.

It's worth noting, too, that Mehta added the Jets might be interested in re-signing all four of the guys listed above, if they were willing to take reduced salaries. That's the definition of a Catch-22 situation, as those players probably feel a little burnt by their employer, but also understand that getting a contract is better than not as the NFL heads into uncertain waters with the labor situation.

Woody, while still a good player, had his injury issues through the year, ending with some achilles issue..... and at his age.
They also drafted Ducasse (OL) with a 2nd rd pick last year, and have a decent prospect in Robert Turner.
Jenkins has shown to be DOMINANT when healthy, but "when healthy"  is the issue.  He was a beast in '08, and the beginning of 09 but back to back ACL tears in a big guy towards the twighlight of his career is not a good thing, and they couldn't keep him at the $$ he was due to make next season (6 mil or something)  I can see them trying to re-sign him on the cheap or incentive/playing time based, but I doubt he'd agree to it.

Good Luck on Gholston getting pressure on ANYBODY...... 3 years, ZERO sacks, and that's with REX wanting him to succeed.

Hell, I would love to see the Saints bring in Jenkins, Woody, and Gholston. We need DT & DE help. Maybe Gholston could play part time DE on Gregg Williams defense and put some pressure on the QB with another OSU alum, Will Smith. If it is on the cheap, i think it is worth it. We definately could use Jenkins to shore up our run defense. This wouldnt be the first time the Jets helped us out. We got Vilma in 2008 for something like a 3rd round pick... Basically nothing and he is the best player on the Saints D... By far!

As far as Woody goes, I would like to add him as well. Both of our right tackles, Bushrod and Strief, are free agents. We should get some insurance if it is the right price. I am very suprised that the Jets cut him.

Gholston...... a weightlifting vagina in shoulder pads.  I've seen ALOT of BAD 1st round draft picks in the past 30 years, but this guy was the worst.
Good Riddance...... more proof that game tape is more important than combine workout numbers.

No, it was a stupid comment, but don't worry, your reasoning is just as flawed. Bob Sutton is just as good of a LB coach, if not better than Greene.

Your stupidity shines with this beauty of a comment...my reasoning is not flawd it's your understanding of what is being said, or perhaps of football in general, that is lacking. A different coach may be able to recognize something in a player that a previous coach ahs not...Sutton has not been as succesful as Greene so he is not better.

If you had stated that the Packers were switching from Dom Capers 3-4 defense to a part time 4-3, and Vernon Gholston could fit in as a 4-3 DE, then I would agree.

With as many injuries and problems the Jets had at the LB position and DE position in 2010, and Gholston STILL couldn't get on the field, should tell you alot.

It tells me as much as it tells you....and that is we have no idea what was taking place behind closed doors and practice....your stupidity continues here as you're trying to turn this into a 'I think he can be good' when I am clearly saying is that it could be worth a shot and try to salvage something from a young player at a discount.

No coach can help him. He just doesn't have it.

That's your opinion and you might be right...but since when does it hurt to try?

But I hope the Packers pick him up, so you can waste a roster spot. Gholston couldn't even make an impact on special teams.

So good luck with your project. And your stupidity

Third times a charm with your stupidity...first, before you call soeone stupid you should look back at the thiings you've said...like the Jets having the number 3 defense and then you attribute that to individual coaching efforts...last I checked the Jets had the #1 running game in 2009 and then release Woodhead. He was picked-up by the Pats and turned out to help them greatly..including against the Jets...So think before you write..because you're calling people stupid and then trying to spin the point...you look foolish doing so.

So good luck with common sense going forward.

By far the dumbest comment posted YTD. Right coaching?? Jets were the #3 ranked defense in the NFL, so where did the coaching fail this player??

Not really, the Jets being ranked number 3 in defense means nothing as to how the LB coach tried to develop this kid and bring out any talent..that was pretty dumb....However, thats not to say there is any talent to be brought out. But there are better LB coaches in the league then the Jets LB coachs and Green Bay has a good one in Kevin Greene while the Jets have Bob Sutton and Jeff Weeks.

So a different aspect from a different coach could salvage something from a player that the Jets coaching staff could not.
